Let’s talk college. Again. But this time, I want to focus on pathways, something I haven’t really shared much about. Many universities, especially state ones, are trying to make their admissions more accessible to more students. What does that mean? It means that when students apply, they may be given more options as pathways to admissions. In many cases, when students apply, they have the option of choosing to “opt in” to alternative admissions plans. Why is this good? It helps students who are truly desiring a certain university to gain admission. Why is this bad? Sometimes it’s an additional financial obligation. Not always. But sometimes. What are the options: 1. Summer start- Typically students move to campus early, earn credits early, and get plugged into campus life. Harder on parents to say goodbye to their kiddos early! 2. Transfer programs- these typically involve starting at another 2 or 4 year university with a guaranteed spot after certain credit hours and a minimum GPA are achieved. GREAT option for some highly competitive schools like Georgia Tech and Clemson in the southeast. 3. Study abroad start- schools are offering students either a summer study abroad before freshman year OR study abroad first semester and then matriculation on campus following. What a great opportunity to see the world, and attend your top choice! Syracuse and Florida State are doing an exceptional job with this. 4. Bridge programs- students are sometimes able to live on campus or nearby, but attend classes at a local community college for core classes. This is typically a one year process, then students attend classes on main campus beginning sophomore year. Things to ask: can students get athletic tickets? can students participate in Greek life and clubs? Options. There are so many! In all transparency, it’s becoming more common for students to explore alternative options for admission. There is not a perfect path for all…feel free to drop your experiences or questions in the comments! #collegecounselor #collegeadvising #collegeprep #collegecounseling

Transfer Tip Tuesday! Applying for transfer can be challenging, but you don't have to do it alone! If you are at a community college, make an appointment with your academic advisor to make sure you are on track for transfer. If you are at a 4-year university, or returning to school after an absence, contact the transfer admissions advisor at one of the schools you'd like to attend. They can often help you make the best choices to improve your transfer admission chances. #tiptuesday #transfertips #transferstudent #collegetransfer #commonappfortransfer #commonapp #collegeapps #collegeapplications #transfertiptuesday

The first-year experience (FYE) is crucial for student retention and long-term success. Students entering higher education face numerous academic and social challenges, and without the proper support, many struggle to transition smoothly. Institutions that invest in structured FYE programs see higher retention rates and more engaged learners. These programs, when effectively designed, provide students with the tools to navigate college life, develop critical skills, and foster a sense of belonging. As you look to build enrollment and retain students designing FYE courses and programs that offer the right mix of academic rigor, support services, and engagement activities is a key component. #highereducation #firstyearexperience #studentsuccess
