🔍 Let’s take a closer look at available screening options: Colonoscopy: Considered the gold standard for detecting colon cancer, a colonoscopy involves a gastroenterologist using a scope to examine the colon for polyps or cancer. Sedation options are available for comfort, and any detected polyps are removed and sent for further examination. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and is repeated every 10 years with normal results, or more frequently if needed based on findings or family history. CT Colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy): This screening test uses a special x-ray to examine the colon for polyps or cancer. It requires a full colon prep but does not need sedation. If abnormalities are found, a follow-up colonoscopy may be recommended. It’s repeated every 5 years with normal results. Sigmoidoscopy: Similar to a colonoscopy but focusing on the rectum and part of the colon. It’s a shorter procedure, lasting 10-20 minutes, and requires a full colon prep. If cancer evidence is found, a colonoscopy is typically recommended. It’s repeated every five years with FIT/FOBT every three years. Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT): Utilizes antibodies to detect blood in stool. It’s performed once a year. High Sensitivity Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT): Screens for blood in stool and is performed once a year. DNA Stool Test (e.g., Cologuard): This FDA-approved at-home test detects blood and certain DNA mutations in stool samples. It’s repeated every three years or as advised by your healthcare provider. Blood Test: For average-risk patients unable or unwilling to undergo a colonoscopy or FIT, a blood draw at the doctor’s office is an option. It’s performed once a year. With so many options, there’s no reason to skip your screening – talk to your doctor about which screening options may be best for you! 💙 #coloncancer #coloncancerawareness #colonoscopy Colon Cancer Coalition
