Founded during the era of the British Empire, the museum acquired many artifacts from countries that were under British rule, 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: British officials, diplomats, and explorers sent items back from colonies to be displayed in the museum. 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝘀: The museum also funded archaeological expeditions around the world, which unearthed many artifacts from foreign lands. This colonial past is why a large portion of the British Museum’s collection comes from outside of Britain.
