In the most recent episode of Ben Franklin's World, Jean Pfaelzer leads us through California’s 250-year history of slavery, covering the California Spanish Missions, the Russian fur trade, and the Gold Rush. NEW EPISODE in our series Why the Rest Hates the West!! Following tradition used to be self-evidently common sense. Of course our ancestors got things right — or we wouldn't be here. Of course the old person was likely to be wiser than the rest of us; when most of us were dead sometime between our late 20s and early 40s, he or she was a success story *by definition*. But things look different now. So different, that we Westerners have been telling ourselves since the 18th century that our ancestors were unjust, stupid, and wrong. Not like us. At all. The moderns were going to make a wonderful new world, based upon their rationalist axioms. Except that now, we don't believe that either. To be sure, we have much higher living standards — and live, oooh, much longer. But we appear to have destroyed the planet in the process, and the future is looking bleak. We no longer expect even to be as well off as our parents — let alone better off than they were. How does all of this look from outside our Western bubble — to people for whom tradition, though badly shaken, still makes common sense? Watch to the end for the slam dunk!

Our world is becoming increasingly polarized, and we’re prone to division before unity in any number of areas. Technology fractures our sense of embodiment and current culture wars cause Christians to part ways over theology, politics, history, issues related to race and social justice, etc. In this episode, hosts Dr. Keith Plummer and Ben Best discuss the name “defragmenting,” as well as the purpose behind the podcast's conversations and interviews in addressing our splintered cultural environment by promoting biblical integrity and thoughtful Christianity. Sr Staff Eng | Follow for new perspectives on Reliability Engineering, Growth, and Technical Leadership
"We humans are not really truth-seeking animals. We are social animals. ... take you back in time 10,000 years and you’re in a small village. If you go along to get along, you can survive. You can procreate. If you’re the village truth-teller, you might get clubbed to death in the middle of the night. Truths are often… They don’t want to be heard because important truths can be uncomfortable, they can be awkward, they can be exhausting. They can make people defensive even if that’s not the intent. But any high performing organization, whether it’s a sports team, a business, a political organization, an activist group, I don’t care what it is, any high performing organization has to have mechanisms and a culture that supports truth-telling. One of the things you have to do is you have to talk about that. You have to talk about the fact that it takes energy to do that." --Jeff Bezos on a recent Lex Fridman podcast episode https://lnkd.in/ducFeTXP

We’ve changed our name! ↓ We changed the name of our podcast from "Fact of Life" to "Against the Tide" to more accurately reflect the mission and tone of our message. "Fact of Life" emphasized uncovering truths in a distracting and inconsistent culture. But we felt that it didn’t fully capture the proactive stance we aim to take in addressing the challenges we face today. Our goal isn’t just to present facts but to stand firm against the prevailing cultural currents that often oppose biblical values. "Against the Tide" better represents our commitment to resist the pressures of a culture that distorts truth and morality. The name embodies our intention not only to navigate information thrown at us but also to actively challenge the misleading narratives of our time. With this name, we are reaffirming our dedication to being a voice of truth, grounded in faith, as we tackle social, political, and theological issues. The change reflects our resolve to stand firm, equipped with the armor of God, as we address the pressing questions of our day.

10 May 1940 was a key moment in the history of the Second World War - it was also a defining moment for 20th and 21st-century politics. Much of our modern political discourse has been influenced by the fall of Chamberlain, the failure of appeasement and the legacy of the Guilty Men. I had actually discussed Chamberlain and appeasement in my very first #HistoryFiresideChat back - if you're interested in learning more about the downfall of Chamberlain, have a listen. And like all the best podcasts, it comes with a transcript to help make it accessible. https://lnkd.in/gBEBA-Bs
