Comfort Film Presents: Commodity Trading: Dies Irae (2022) A bad trip that replicates the dissolution of the self/government/family/body within the solvent of a white supremacist hyperreal suspension. M. Woods attempts to enter the Numb Spiral through the Great Incision of Oxoniae, lulled into the digital sickness to be with his doppelgänger. After entering a portal in a webcam site, he becomes Abraxas, recklessly seeking completion through The Numb Spiral. Meanwhile, Joshua enters the Numb Spiral through 9DVR, a game platform installed at Culver City’s Westfield Shopping Center. The White Father haunts Joshua until Joshua decides to burn down the White Father’s house in righteous anger. COMMODITY TRADING: DIES IRAE by Chicago-based multi-disciplinary artist, M. Woods, is a surrealist nightmare contorting through a hyperreal labyrinth of protests, ruins, and disturbing visions of end-state Capitalism. Using swirling 16mm film, M. takes the spectator on a trip to the Desert of the Real, where the United States plunges into a hallucinatory zone of pure nothingness. While this is M’s first solo screening in Chicago, their body of work, collectively entitled The Numb Spiral, has screened extensively for the past decade including at IFFR, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, and the Flaherty Seminar. I cannot begin to tell you how important being seen is. And by being seen, I mean the seeing of the soul. The piece of us that lies beyond all stories and notions of identity. The piece of us that lies beyond all of our conclusions. We are so used to seeing the story of someone, that I believe we may have missed the piece that changes everything. The piece that serves as a reflection, and evidence that we belong to each other. The piece that causes to act so vey differently. I made a 1m 53s film that might serve as a contribution to the endeavor. https://lnkd.in/gaUSf4U4

I contributed a chapter to this book about George Lucas, which is now available. It's an overview of various elements of his life and business. My chapter, "George Lucas in Museums," is about the creation of the Lucasfilm Archives, and how exhibits connect with the fandom, reinforce his creative vision, and expand the transmedia universe of Star Wars.

What is Postmodernist #Film? Postmodernist film emerged in the latter half of the 20th century, deeply rooted in the broader cultural and philosophical movement of #postmodernism. This movement arose as a reaction to the perceived limitations and failures of #modernism, particularly after the social upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s. Spanning various fields, including art, literature, architecture, and #cinema, postmodernism sought to question established norms and embrace new forms of expression. The cultural shifts of the counterculture movements in the 1960s and 1970s, with their emphasis on questioning authority, tradition, and social norms, laid the groundwork for the experimental and subversive tendencies of postmodernist film. Additionally, early modernist filmmakers like surrealist Luis Bunuel, New Wave’s Jean-Luc Godard, and Orson Welles, paved the way with their innovative techniques and willingness to break from conventional cinema. This is going to be increasingly important for 2K resolution films of the 2010s in a 4k era. Digital resolutions cannot be remastered in the same way as film masters. Upscaling does not provide more detailed pixels.
Martin Scorsese and archivists from the Library of Congress, UCLA, MOMA, and elsewhere tell Indiewire why it's important not to leave film behind in the digital age.

Here’s a film about the 1950s – “The World As It Was” – that will tell you a great deal about life in the U.S.A. today, while disabusing anyone of the notion that nostalgia for that mephitic decade is in order, for it was a time when “democracy” tended toward totalitarianism. In doing so, it sowed the bitter fruit that is poisoning us today. Without understanding the long-standing effects of those years, it is impossible to grasp the deepest dimensions of our current nightmare. Chapter One of the documentary series, Four Died Trying, directed by John Kirby and produced by Libby Handros, appropriately subtitled: “To see where we are, look where we’ve been,” does that brilliantly. The series opened four months ago with “The Prologue” (see review) wherein the lives, importance, and assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy are explored; how the government and media buried the truth of who assassinated them and why; and why it matters today. Season One will unfold over the next year with chapters covering their lives and assassinations in greater detail. Season Two will be devoted to the government and media coverups, citizen investigations, and the intelligence agencies and their media mouthpieces’ mind control operations aimed at the American people that continue today. https://lnkd.in/eAWiGpWp

It is a testament to the greatness of this film that I was rendered speechless after seeing it in the IMAX theater. My sudden and immediate desire to see it again after the credits is further evidence of the powerful hold that this film had on me. This is not a review; instead, I will be writing in an attempt to identify the exact reasons why this film — at three hours — felt like a brisk ninety minutes, and how I felt simultaneously sympathetic and horrified about the eponymous subject of the film. The film is segmented into three distinct periods of time, although there is frequently overlap between these segments which reveal nuances and subtleties that were previously hidden in the first occurence. By its definition, Oppenheimer would qualify as a biopic, but much like The Social Network (Fincher, 2010) and Steve Jobs (Boyle, 2015) — which were both penned by Sorkin — it is less concerned with following a linear structure of the subject’s personal bildungsroman and more focused on the specific events that led to his infamy. The film could also be classified as a World War II film or a war film, but unlike Saving Private Ryan (Spielberg, 1998) and Dunkirk (Nolan, 2017), it is set almost entirely in America, acting merely as the catalyst for the Manhattan Project. While General Groves (Matt Damon) are near-constant reminders about the purpose of the Atomic Bomb, Nolan conveys Oppenheimer’s (Cillian Murphy) single-minded focus by keeping overt references to the war elusive or amorphous until a decision has to be made on where the bomb should be dropped. **** Read the full review at the link below. #film #movie https://lnkd.in/eaw6Kgmq
