Lifting up my relative General John Fulton Reynolds on this Memorial Day (along with the connection between the Civil War and civil rights). A respected senior commander in the Union Army, Reynolds was key in committing the Army to the Battle of Gettysburg (where he unfortunately died). Resistant to the politics of Washington, D.C., Reynolds previously declined President Abraham Lincoln’s request that he command the Army of the Potomac (the penchant to buck bureaucracy remains strong in his family). Today, you can see him standing resolutely in places throughout Pennsylvania (including in front of Philadelphia’s City Hall). Many think that the Civil War was a long ago moment in time - separate and apart from who we are today. Columbia University Professor Barbara Fields corrects this misguided notion: “I think what we need to remember, most of all, is that the Civil War is not over until we, today, have done our part in fighting it, as well as understanding what happened when the Civil War generation fought it. William Faulkner said once that history is not “was,” it’s “is,” and what we need to remember about the Civil War is that the Civil War “is,” in the present, as well as the past. The generation that fought the war, the generation that argued over the definition of the war, the generation that had to pay the price in blood, that had to pay the price in blasted hopes and a lost future also established a standard that will not mean anything until we finish the work. You can say there’s no such thing as slavery anymore, we’re all citizens. But if we’re all citizens, then we have a task to do to make sure that that, too, is not a joke. If some citizens live in houses and others live on the street, the Civil War is still going on. People on both sides of this issue will use this news as confirmation of their beliefs. They'll rationalize the information as proof that it's the evil-doing of the other party. How will bias confirmation affect the readers? The voters? Beliefs, values, and mores affect every decision we make. Anomie is the decay of values and mores. How decadent (decay) have we become? Beliefs may reflect the decadence of a society. Is supporting a criminal for POTUS a measure of anomie and decadence? Maybe it's time for the RNC to move on from the candidate with a 28 point lead on his republican opponent. I'm reminded of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot and his wife were warned to flee and not look back. Lot's wife hesitated. She looked back. What happened? She was turned into a pillar of salt. Evangelists and the RNC could take heed. Move on. Select someone else. Romney, Kinzinger. and Cheney are people who reflect more holsum, pro-social values. Choice is better than no choice. What are your beliefs about this? Will your vote be affected by your beliefs about what or who is right or wrong? To my point above: That's the power of the role your beliefs play in society.

Prime example here of the Democrats’ strategy of “credentials create credibility”. They believe, by simply granting someone the title of “historian” (based on their own made up criteria and process), that makes what they have to say in the realm of history true or accurate, same with scientists, doctors, etc. The time has come to throw out bs credentials and judge information based on ITS MERIT and not ITS SOURCE. If your doctor tells you that poisonous mushrooms are good for you, will you eat them? Or will you question the merit of the information? Take this approach to everything you see and here on the internet. If it doesn’t make sense, there’s a reason.

One of the pivotal moments that drove my pursuit of a career in the armed forces was in my high school AP US History class, I asked my teacher how was it that the US had been so successful when it was only a couple centuries old whereas so many other countries that had been established for so much longer were nowhere as powerful or stable? Without missing a beat, she responded “the fact that we have a new government every four years and the diversity of our people.” Digesting this concept, we come to understand that the diversity fuels innovation that challenge preexisting notions and a systematic government overhaul carried out through democratic processes enables rational change to occur, with a balanced amount of constitutional conservativism to ensure our nation’s security. These principles have guided our nation through tumultuous times. Although it’s hard to accept, at points throughout our history, the majority often argued in favor of unethical practices including the enslavement of other human beings, the sanctioned displacement of native populations from their homes, the prohibition of women’s suffrage, segregation (and sanctioned severe mistreatment) of non-white Americans, to list a few - all ideas into which the majority were indoctrinated. Although we had our hiccups, in all listed cases, we grew together as a nation based on objectively challenging those ideas and asking the hard questions: Does this really make sense? Is this fair? Would I be ok if I (or worse, my child) were born into that situation? I strongly believe in the principles upon which my country stands and have faith that we will always come to the right ethical conclusion on all issues independent of predispositions in due time. It is our civic duty to stay informed, to keep asking hard questions, and to drive reaching the morally correct outcomes. “For in the final analysis, our most common link is that we inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children’s futures. And we are all mortal.” Happy Veterans Day.
