🙋♀️ 👟 Raise your hand if you've ever bought a pair of Allbirds wool runners 🙋♀️ 👟 I had the chance to interview Aileen Lerch, the Director of Sustainability for Allbirds, about their new "#netzero shoe, their challenge to the footwear industry, and how they're getting back to basics as a company. "You hear a lot of companies these days have these far off targets, and the reality is, they don't really know how they're going to achieve them," she argued, but from Allbirds' very first shoe -- that iconic Wool Runner -- they've been laser-focused on sustainability, calculating the #carbonfootprint of their products from day one. Lerch believes every company should do the same: "The thing that has to happen with this carbon footprint labeling is, it needs to be commonplace, everyone needs to be doing it." Imagine this: A five storeys high bathtub as long as the Eiffel Tower is tall, filled to the brim with 66 million pairs of shoes. And guess what? It's refilled every single day. Shockingly, 90% of those shoes will end up in landfills within a year, mainly because of how quickly we're producing and discarding them. And sneakers are a big part of the problem. Not just because of the sheer volume - nearly 20 million pairs a day - but because they're at the heart of a consumer culture that demands ever faster fashion cycles, fueled by new design launches every day. So the big question is not not so much how and with what material we produce, but simply: how to produce less? And surprisingly, some of the answers can be found in the footwear-obsessed subculture known as sneakerheads. This group of sneaker geeks isn't just about collecting sneakers; it's about valuing them. They're big on repairing, reusing and reselling. 🌟 So, it's clear the issue isn't black and white. It's not just about the big companies pushing out too many shoes or consumers constantly craving something new. It's a dynamic interplay in which we, as consumers, also have our responsibilities. In a recent conversation with a jewelry maker, I learned something fascinating—how much of today’s jewelry is now being made with #3DPrinting, just like toys! In chemistry, as in life and business, synthesis is not just a simple combination of elements, but a creative process that elevates and distils deeper meanings: by blending ideas from different fields, we can find new truths and create concepts that are greater than the sum of their parts. Synthesising, therefore, does not mean simplifying, but uniting and refining ideas to reach a deeper and more meaningful understanding, to create something new. This vision is also reflected in the way footwear is designed. Every element, from the sole to the upper, from waterproof and breathable fabrics to laces, is combined to create a product that is more than the sum of its parts.
