We are delighted that our ESG Director Talia Goldman had the opportunity to share her insights into sustainability and carbon reduction in Sustainable Packaging News recently. Designing recyclable food packaging from materials that fit with available waste streams has underpinned our approach for many years, and we now notice an industry-wide shift towards sustainability in the food-to-go sector. "Understanding how paperboard and fibre-based composites are recycled helps us to create packaging that is suitable for these processes, ensuring we continue to evolve and refine the recyclability of our food packaging." Talia Goldman. Thanks to the BPF for another useful webinar - today's was an Update on the market for Recycled Polymers. The interplay between sustainability and economics is really interesting. Is it a good thing to have legislation to move things along, or does that bring with it the risk of unintended consequences? There was a useful graphic on circularity showing the challenges of Collection, Sorting and Recycling after the product has been used. We get involved in all these areas and are investing now to improve the Sorting aspect.

Despite some packaging being more recyclable, it does not mean that it is actually recycled to its potential. Recycling rates vary by material, about 5% for plastic, 30% to 40% for glass and metal, and about 60% for paper! Sustainability presents the primary challenge and opportunity in the packaging industry, which we discuss in this week's investment note at Sustainable Market Strategies.

🌿 Charting Our Green Path: Innovation in ESG Actions at Our Headquarters 🌿 Within our ESG action plans at our headquarters in Nules we have taken a small step that illustrates our commitment to sustainability by removing more than 120 individual bins, replacing them with 90 common containers according to type of waste distributed in 25 strategic points of the offices. This change not only promotes efficient recycling and proper waste separation, but also optimizes resources and reduces environmental impact since studies indicate that the implementation of specific recycling systems in workplaces can increase the recycling rate by more than 50%. By implementing specific areas for different types of waste (paper, plastic, organic, etc.), we make it easier for each employee to contribute more effectively to environmental care. This approach reinforces our commitment to sustainability, which is key in our relationships with customers and partners. We will continue to look for ways to minimize our environmental impact and foster a culture of respect and ecological awareness among our partners.

🌍 The Global Shift Towards Eco-Friendly Packaging: Are We Moving Fast Enough? As of September 2024, the global push for sustainable packaging continues to gain momentum, with more businesses opting for biodegradable and recyclable materials. Recent headlines spotlight major corporations, including fast food giants, pledging to eliminate plastic packaging by 2025. But with climate deadlines looming, the question is: Are we doing enough, or are these changes too slow? On one hand, we see great strides in innovation, like plant-based plastics and compostable paper products. But on the other hand, governments and industries often prioritize short-term profits over long-term environmental health. 🔄 What do you think? Are companies genuinely committed to sustainability, or is greenwashing still a widespread issue? What role should consumers play in pushing for faster action? How can we balance economic growth with environmental responsibility? Let's spark a discussion about the true impact of these initiatives and what more can be done to ensure a greener future for all! 🌱 #Sustainability #EcoFriendly #Packaging #Biodegradable #EnvironmentalImpact #ClimateAction #LinkedInCommunity

ESG, for shaping good business The ban on single-use plastics in the first phase will officially take effect on April 22nd. Surprisingly, the driving force behind this legislation did not come from the hospitality industry but from a reputable institution's consumer survey on environmental consumption demand! As a practitioner in this industry, I should humbly examine myself. Here are my personal insights on ESG and sustainability: 1. Many industry decision-makers may believe that implementing ESG policies will inevitably increase operating costs, thus reducing the willingness to implement these policies. Through continuous validation, I have found that this is not the case. Decision-makers should strive to dispel this misconception and misjudgment. 2. Through interactions and collaboration with our R&D team members, I have discovered that the main reason for reducing operating costs is based on ESG principles. 3. It is exciting that we seem to be embarking on a journey that creates more business opportunities for products and services, potentially leading to a new business blue ocean of second and third profit curves for hotels! I am keen to share these experiences and look forward to jointly launching hotel industry products and services based on ESG standards that lead the consumer market's sustainable development before the Environmental Ecological Bureau (EEB) implements the second phase of the plastic ban in 2025. Therefore, starting from now, we should take action together to shape a sustainable consumer market and sustainable business enterprises that coexist harmoniously with nature🏞️!

Happy World Earth Day! This Earth Day, under the theme "Planet vs. Plastics," we echo the call to reduce plastic production by 60% by 2040 and strive towards a plastic-free future. Like a lot of manufacturers who work with a global supply chain, reduction in plastic use has been identified as a key sustainability priority for OKA - we know we still have a long way to go, and we want to do more. We’ve already begun replacing plastic with alternatives where we can and are looking to new solutions to safely pack fragile items. In the near future we will be setting updated reduction targets in this area to measure our ongoing impact. Now more than ever, it is imperative that businesses, like ours, take meaningful actions towards a more sustainable future. For further insights into our ongoing sustainability progress, you can read our latest report here. #sustainability #EarthDay2024 #PlanetvsPlastics https://lnkd.in/eej4CsgU
