A CHRONOLOGY OF A DEAL DONE WRONG While still numb from the outright rejection by DOJ of the jetBlue - Spirit combination, I thought it might be fun to follow up on an earlier chart mapping out market cap changes among the 3 airlines that were in pursuit of Spirit. Value destruction of an airline. Value destruction of a sector. Brain cell destruction among those protecting consumers. Maybe the decision was based in law and a good understanding of it. But the law of unintended consequences pertaining to this industry is just simply ignored on the Hill, at the DOJ, the DOT, and now a Republican appointee does the work necessary to help a concentrated industry keep on concentrating. For me, I am thinking it will be better to not be around for as much of the second half of the deregulation game after watching the first half in courtside seats. It was a damn exciting first half full of storylines. In my early career, many economic arguments we used to educate on commercial transactions and the positive leverage that can stem from combining networks looked to other similarly situated industries like telephones. They broke that industry up, right? So, for those that like a smaller industry and not one allowed to build strength to compete, this judge's decision is for you.
