Dwarf planets are a fascinating category of celestial objects in our solar system. Unlike the eight classical planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune), which have cleared their orbits of other debris, dwarf planets have not achieved this criterion. This means they share their orbital space with other objects, such as asteroids or other small bodies. The most well-known dwarf planet is Pluto, which was reclassified from a planet to a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 2006. Other notable dwarf planets include Eris, Haumea, Makemake, and Ceres. Ceres, located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, was the first dwarf planet to be discovered and is also the largest object in the asteroid belt. Dwarf planets come in various sizes and compositions. Some have moons (like Pluto and Eris), and they can have diverse surface features, including icy regions, craters, and even atmospheres in some cases.

This stunning shot of the Lagoon nebula (M8) was caught by Ken Walker, in Sagittarius with his SVX130T-R. This emission nebula is one of only two star forming nebulae, that are faintly visible to the eye from mid-northern latitudes. It rests roughly 5,200 light-years away from Earth and has a diameter of about 150 light-years. In addition, it includes a tornado-like structure caused by a hot O-type star, that emanates ultraviolet light, heating and ionizing gasses on the nebula’s surface. https://lnkd.in/gfnVfmc6 #stellarvue

Moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) are translucent marine creatures found in oceans worldwide, preferring coastal and shallow waters. They have a saucer-shaped, bell-like body with four horseshoe-shaped gonads visible through their bell. Moon jellies primarily drift with currents but use pulsations for slow movement. They feed on plankton, small fish, and larvae by capturing prey with mucus-covered tentacles. Lacking a brain, heart, or lungs, they rely on a simple nerve net for coordination.
