Medal of Honor Monday: Sergeant William H. Carney Sergeant William H. Carney, born into slavery in Norfolk, Virginia 1840, became one of the most remarkable figures in American military history. Escaping the bonds of slavery through the Underground Railroad, Carney later joined the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, one of the first Black regiments to fight in the Civil War. On July 18, 1863, during the assault on Fort Wagner in South Carolina, Carney's courage was unparalleled. As the color bearer carrying the American flag, he faced relentless enemy fire. Despite being wounded multiple times, Carney never let the flag touch the ground. He planted it on the fort's ramparts and, even as the battle raged on, carried it back to his regiment, ensuring it remained aloft. Carney's commitment to the flag and his fellow soldiers was extraordinary. His actions symbolized the fight for the Union and embodied the struggle for freedom and equality. Despite the grave personal risk, his bravery under fire is a testament to his steadfast dedication to his country and his belief in its ideals. Sergeant Carney was finally awarded the Medal of Honor in 1900, nearly 37 years after his heroic actions. The delay was due to the slow bureaucratic processes of the time, compounded by the racial prejudices that often overlooked the contributions of Black soldiers. Growing up in the Marine Corps, one battle undeniably reflected our strong culture: The Battle of Iwo Jima. This morning, I shared a bit about this historic World War II battle and the powerful leadership lessons learned there with a fellow Marine and Echelon Front Instructor, Rob Jones. The Battle of Iwo Jima is encapsulated in the famous photo, but there’s a reason the picture is so notorious. It tells the story of Marines, who put the flag there as a sign of their dedication to their country and determination to complete the mission. This is how you create culture. The men on that island spent 36 days fighting a determined enemy force. Approximately 6800 Marines lost their lives during the Battle Of Iwo Jima. The picture, however, became an everlasting symbol of who we are as Marines - proudly dedicated to fighting for our brothers and country. In order to create culture, you have to propagate the story of where your organization came from. The Secretary of the Navy, James Forrestal, famously remarked on the significance of Iwo Jima by saying, "The flag-raising on Iwo Jima means a Marine Corps for the next 500 years." Today, whilst on my travels, I had the privilege of re-visiting after many years, the Commando Memorial in Lochaber, a poignant tribute to the Army Commandos of WWII and the Royal Marines who have carried on their legacy. Although I am ex Army, I am not commando-trained, but know some Anthropists who are, namely the ex- Royal Marines. They would undoubtedly recognize the formidable motto inscribed: 'United We Conquer.' This visit reminded me of the power of unity in such dire times, both in the past and the need for it today. As a nation, I believe if we come together in the spirit I have always envisioned for Anthropy, we can tackle pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges. However, achieving this requires the same determination, bravery, initiative, and purposefulness demonstrated by the commandos. It also now requires this of our new Government, given its minority of votes, regardless of its majority of seats. It also requires those who didn’t vote #Labour to be open to such collective endeavour. If I have one call from seeing this again, it is to channel this Anthropic spirit and collaboration, towards conquering the issues that impact us all.
