This really hits home as we talk about this a lot on our team. We have a tendency to post only the "highlights" of our work (and I am guilty of this)--even when we're at meetings in exotic places--where I spend 90% or more of my time on my laptop, in the office, a meeting, a hotel room or on my sofa at home. When I am actually at conferences, I pull 10-14 hour days usually in a windowless convention center or other meeting space (and yes, there are social events, after which I then have to catch up with emails) with just enough down time to do this again the next day. So if I end up seeing some wildlife after the conference and I post those photos, few understand all the work behind it. I haven't been in the field for my own projects since 2018, but it doesn't mean I haven't been doing conservation. This creates a distorted reality for what truly makes impact in conservation. *Note to self: post the boring photos too 😀 #denverzoo
What does a career in conservation look like? I usually post pictures of cool bats, interesting field work, and exciting trips. However, I often feel bad for constantly posting my highlight reel and worry about the impression this leaves on early career scientists. The truth is that conservation often looks more like this photo. And conservation also looks like meetings and phone calls and reports and data and emails and briefings and writing until you can't see straight. To me, conservation is more about managing people than managing wildlife. Maybe this doesn't need to be repeated but I want to say it to support everyone in the field: field bios, office managers, contract specialists, admin and support staff, etc. You don't have to be cold and muddy every day to have an impact but I hope you always have the option to go outside and remind yourself why you do this work.
