Congratulations to the dozens of teams that completed the Year 1 Competition of the DARPA Triage Challenge! Year 2, starting today, will be harder and more realistic, but after last week I think this group is up to the task. A few highlights from Year 1: * Among the 3 top-scoring teams in the Systems Competition, strategies included all-UAV, all-UGV, and a mix. Love to see multiple paths to solving the problem. To test the teams, Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center - TATRC, Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic, The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory set up a first-of-its-kind mass casualty simulation, with real-time biometric ground truth and scoring, extensive video coverage, and dozens of actors and manikins, all under a human subjects research umbrella. Beyond the DARPA Triage Challenge, this establishes a new benchmark for rigor and learning in mass casualty training. * The Virtual Platform, in development by ARA for the Virtual Competition, is proving to be a useful test ground for real-world application. Several teams in the Systems Competition also used the platform to work on their real-world strategies. The core of the platform is a physiological simulator, BioGears, which drives the meta-humans' responses to injury. As it continues to incorporate more injury types and physiological features, the platform could provide unprecedented fidelity for many medical training scenarios. * Top-performing teams in the Data Competition already are out-performing state-of-the-art approaches for predicting life-saving interventions in trauma patients. And, they are doing this in a realistic testing environment--their algorithms have to handle data as it is recorded in the helicopter and trauma bay, in real-time with all its messiness and missingness. Humanoid Robots are now making robots. Digit the Humanoid Robot - The First Commercial Deployment of a Humanoid Robot making New Robots. While humanoid robots have been used in other contexts before, RoboFab is the first dedicated factory for mass-producing robots for commercial use. Agility Robotics has recently deployed its humanoid robot, Digit, in a commercial setting at its new factory in Salem, Oregon. This marks the first time a humanoid robot is used in a commercial operation, where Digit will handle tasks such as moving, loading, and unloading totes. The factory, named RoboFab, is designed to produce over 10,000 robots annually and aims to address workforce challenges like injuries and high turnover. This deployment represents a significant step in the mass production and application of humanoid robots in industrial settings. On June 5, 2024 Digit completed it's first day of work for GXO Logistics, Inc. (NYSE: GXO) as part of regular operations. This is the result of a multi-year agreement between GXO and Agility Robotics to begin deploying Digit in GXO’s logistics operations. This agreement, which follows a proof-of-concept pilot in late 2023, is both the industry’s first formal commercial deployment of humanoid robots and first Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) deployment of humanoid robots. My Take The deployment of Agility Robotics' humanoid robot, Digit, at RoboFab in Salem, Oregon, represents a groundbreaking moment in robotics. As the first commercial use of a humanoid robot for mass-producing other robots, this initiative addresses workforce challenges like injuries, high turnover and labor shortages.
