What’s the #1 thing a CIO should do to be successful? I’m convinced that successful CIO’s and senior IT leaders make sure that their organization drives value for the business. How do you do that? 1. You build a strong Business and IT Relationship by understanding the business and the needs of your business partners. This is not a ‘one and done’ thing. It is a continuous process that requires checking your ego at the door, rolling up your sleeves, including observing and listening for understanding. 2. You drive value for your business partners. There should be hard benefits in everything you do - cost savings, improved efficiencies, innovation, etc. It requires clarity of thought and the ability to articulate the business value in everything you do. 3. The business (and CFO) doesn’t care about exotic IT strategies or architectures, IT ivory tower mandates or IT projects that amount to sideways moves just to get on vendor M or vendor A or vendor G’s latest technology stack. It requires a clear understanding of the WIFM for your business partner - I.e. what’s in it for me. It requires a clear understanding of the financials and who’s going to pay for it. 4. Trust is EARNED over time. The business will trust IT more when IT does what it promised to do. Your title means nothing without delivering tangible results for the business. It requires delivering projects on-time, on-budget and with a focus on quality. The good CIO’s and senior IT leaders do these things. If you don’t, the clock is ticking on your failure. #CIO #CFO
