Chief Happiness Officer @ Smiling Bowtie | Happiness IS a competitive advantage - I help tech leaders get there | Keynote Speaker & Leadership Coach
They say relationships at work don’t matter. Until you realize that they do. When I was an engineer, I encountered many teams that behaved like groups. Behind the scenes, when it came to doing the work, it was an “everyone for themselves” mindset instead of working towards a shared common goal. People only worked on what was assigned to them, and spending time helping others was not a priority, nor was getting to know each other as people. In these types of environments, some big red flags can foster a lack of productivity. - Sharing of information is lost due to poor communication - Lack of collaboration due to siloed working - Lack of psychological safety where blame culture blossoms - And of course… Unhappy workers who would rather work from home than work from the office with people they enjoy working with. When you’re dealing with bleeding-edge tech, collaboration of minds is not only a benefit but a competitive advantage. This can only be done through people coming together as a team, knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses and building rapport with teammates inside and outside of work. This advantage opens up many avenues for productivity - Increased communication and collaboration - A safe space to fail and learn - Fosters inspiration and innovation - Creates happy people who find purpose in their work Relationships at work have proven to be one of the most important factors to happiness in the workplace that can foster all these advantages. I have seen it work wonders and turn teams from great to awesome. Turn your team around and receive the same advantages by: - Scheduling regular team-building activities and workshops to improve relationships and trust among team members - Reflect on team performance and identify areas for improvement - Focus on relationships and building them with each team member As we interact with the people that we spend 1/2 of our waking day with, getting to know them as people will not only foster happiness at work but bring happiness to our life outside of work. Brand-Builder | Story-Teller | Free-lancer writer | I’m sharing my journey back to myself as an inspiration for others to travel back Home. Building my Community here on Linkedin. Welcome Home 💛
I used to joke with all my auditor friends: “What is a stronger bond than two auditors surviving busy season together?” And that statement stands for itself. One thing I always love in my Auditor career is that the busy season, in fact, brings people together. All of the therapist sessions between a group of auditors working late together, all those hours spending in the office, in the team meetings, all of the frustrations on the clients meetings, late hours, crazy variances, unreasonable expectations, non-sense testing workpapers - all these things have somehow built a mutual understanding between auditors, we have a deep empathy towards one another that one cant understand if one has never been in one busy season himself. And I truly appreciate all of the friendships that I’ve made that lasts outside the workplace (even when the only topic we talk about is work related). Good lucks to all my auditors out there. You guys GOT it. We have survived too many storms to be bothered by raindrops :) #auditors #busyseason #yougotthis #support #tracyytly Tracy L.
