It’s important to acknowledge that there are many dedicated and hardworking individuals in NYC. Their efforts and commitment are truly commendable. However, it’s also clear that the system in NYC has its flaws. Corruption, excessive focus on documentation, and power struggles are significant issues. It’s disheartening to see that some individuals, including those of our own community, can sometimes be a hindrance. The presence of fraud and unethical practices is a serious concern that needs to be addressed. Despite these challenges, I remain optimistic. There are many who genuinely want to make a positive difference, and by continuing to push for change, we can expose those who are part of the problem. Let’s keep rattling the bushes and support those who are working towards a better future.

The fight for justice isn’t easy. Elected officials have many powerful, well-financed interests pulling at them, and pushing officials to serve the needs of their constituents often means running up against excuse after excuse. Yet, our affiliates stay strong in their resolve that the problems our communities face are solvable - and that the forces causing these problems are far from a mystery. As Reverend Wells, a leader with BRIGHT in Brevard County, reflects, “the system is not omnipotent with motives that are incomprehensible… it can be deciphered, dissolved, and eventually dismantled when confronted by organized people.” More often than not, we know what’s behind the injustices plaguing our communities. Whether it’s the companies making money off a jail expansion or the developers who don’t find affordable housing profitable enough, the root of these issues is rarely unknown. But, as Reverend Wells remarks, “the system will not change the rules… we are going to have to change the system.” When our affiliates bring together thousands of organized people, we have the power to push our elected officials towards making the changes that our communities need. The status quo is killing and seriously injuring our neighbors, and Mayor Adams and our city’s leaders are failing to protect New Yorkers in all five boroughs from deadly traffic violence. The data from the first nine months of 2024 shows clearly what inaction looks like: 193 people dead and 2,338 people left with life-altering injuries. We know it doesn’t have to be this way. We need Governor Hochul to get cars and trucks off our streets by starting congestion pricing. We need Mayor Adams to get the NYC Streets Plan back on track. We need the City Council to advance legislation to daylight every single intersection in our city. This work isn’t easy, and it will take political will to get done, but it will save lives. The bill, called “Secure DC,” is a combination of provisions from a dozen different crime bills the council has previously considered, with some new ones tacked on.
