On this Human Rights Day, we reflect on the historical and ongoing struggles faced by people of African descent due to colonialism, slavery, genocide, human trafficking, and displacement. The scars of these injustices continue to impact communities today through systemic inequalities, racial discrimination, and economic disparities. Human Rights Day serves as a reminder that the fight for justice and equality is far from over. It's time to address ongoing human rights violations, advocate for reparative justice, and dismantle systems of inequality. Today, ACCEC reaffirms our mandate– to protect and promote the human rights and dignity of all people of African descent. Hate speech aims to silence people and is a threat to human rights and democracy. It is key that in addressing hate speech, we balance key rights including equality, non-discrimination and freedom of expression. ICCL will keep advocating for a human rights based approach to tackling hate in Ireland, including through legislation on incitement to violence or hatred, and a holistic government action plan against hate.
