🎗️ World AIDS Day Theme #2023: "Let communities lead" On World AIDS Day, we must remember that it is more than just recognising community accomplishments. It is an invitation to actively assist community leaders. The importance of community leadership in resolving the AIDS pandemic is being highlighted on World AIDS Day 2023. Here is how we can advocate for support and help: - Communities' leadership roles need to be made core in all HIV plans and programmes and their formulation, budgeting, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. “Nothing about us without us.” - Communities' leadership roles need to be fully and reliably funded to enable the required scale-up and be properly supported and remunerated. “Not ending AIDS is more expensive than ending it.” #WAD #WorldAidsDay #CommunityUpliftment #GermanyInAfrica

The commitment made by African Health Ministers and international partners in Tanzania is an important step towards achieving the goal of ending AIDS in children. As we mark the first year of this alliance, it is crucial to assess the progress made so far and identify areas that require further attention because we need to do more. With seven more years ahead, we must remain dedicated and focused on implementing effective strategies to ensure the well-being of children affected by HIV/AIDS. There is still a need for meaningful community engagement and the closing of gaps to ensure that we stay true to the commitments made towards ending HIV in children and ensure that no child dies due to AIDS-related illnesses, which are affecting many children due to gaps in early diagnosis, inadequate treatment linkage, and insufficient child-friendly regimens. https://lnkd.in/dtsRmric

At the core of the Elton John AIDS Foundation's mission lies a commitment to advance health equity and social justice for marginalized communities. We can’t do this without including people who use drugs in our global efforts. To end new cases of HIV , we must change the narrative around personal drug use and meet people with support instead of judgement and criminalization. In 2023 alone, we allocated $1.3M to three new projects in Kenya, Nigeria and the US to address the intersection of drug use, HIV and social stigma with the goal of creating a world where everyone has non-judgmental access to the support and treatment they need. The twice-yearly PrEP injection is an exciting development, especially with its 100% effectiveness shown in trials with cisgender women in South Africa and Uganda. 🌍 This could be particularly impactful for those who find it challenging to stick to a daily pill routine due to reasons like forgetfulness or side effects. 💊 However, we also need to consider the cost. The daily PrEP pill is still the more affordable option, which is a crucial factor in many African communities where resources are limited. 💸 For many, the lower cost of the pill makes it more accessible and sustainable in the long run. 💡 Ultimately, it’s about meeting the diverse needs and wants of our communities across Africa. By offering both the pill and the injection, we can ensure that more people have the choice to protect themselves against HIV in a way that works best for them—whether that’s through the affordability of the pill or the convenience of the injection. 🔄 Is the African government ready to procure these injections? As #AIDS2024 concludes, the Africa REACH team reflects on key discussions from the conference: 1. Congratulations to Linda-Gail Bekker and the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation team for their pivotal role in the Lenacapavir PrEP study. This work paves the way for broader PrEP options, particularly benefiting populations facing barriers to daily medication regimens. 👏 2. UNAIDS released the 2024 report on the conference's opening day, 'The Urgency of Now'. Regrettably, it confirms that children continue to lag in key indicators. With persistent gaps in treatment access and minimal progress in ending vertical transmission over the past decade, we urgently call for a renewed focus on children. To address these challenges in Africa, Africa REACH has formed a coalition of African-led organizations dedicated to ending AIDS on the continent. Our partners include OAFLAD/OPDAD, Desmond Tutu Health Foundation, The Africa HIV Control Working Group, All Africa Conference of Churches, and Paediatric-Adolescent Treatment Africa. Together, we're advocating for change by targeting African Health and Finance ministers, lawmakers, and policy drafters. Our key focus areas are: - Improving the working environment for Community Health Workers - Ensuring access to information on combination prevention and comprehensive sexual education - Providing access to optimal pediatric and child-friendly treatment options - Securing sustained domestic funding for health We invite you to widely share our Call to Action as we continue pushing for an AIDS-free generation in Africa.
