The financial mindset a mother holds and projects, will directly affect her children’s future relationship with money too. 🤰 Your children pick up on way more than you’d expect, no matter how much you try to shield them from it. If your life choices strictly depend on a budget, or if you're carrying around guilt, shame, or insecurity around financial literacy, they’ll sense it. And if you keep living in this way, your life is not your own❗ It’s time to change the narrative, and to set a strong example. We are doing this fun exercise with our kidpreneurs-in-training for practical learning about checking (while it may seem like a dying art, we absolutely want to have our young ones familiar with ALL the ways money can come to them!). Even more than fun, we want to have kids envision and consider themselves existing from a space of #wealth and #generosity. So, we share the components of a check as demonstrated by us writing a $1,000,000 check to them, and then we give them a blank check to write to the person/entity of choice, with an amount and purpose they choose. My goal as a new parent Build generational wealth Right alongside my mission to raise my child with strong Christian values and faith. As an immigrant, the moments I get to sit at my parents' feet and receive their wisdom on passing wealth to the next generation are few and far between. Despite this, here are a few steps I am taking to give the next generation a strong financial foundation: ☞ Opening an RESP account ☞ Maximizing annual contributions early in the year to secure a 20% return (Canada Education Savings Grant) and leverage growth over time. ☞ Creating a budget line item for his savings in the family budget. ☞ Preauthorizing his monthly savings. ☞ Opening an investment account to buy stocks/shares as his yearly birthday gift, teaching him stock market basics. ☞ Leveraging the library for great books on financial literacy for kids. ☞ Seeking advice from those who have walked this path before me. Recently, I had an insightful discussion with Andre S., an advocate for children's financial literacy, whose app Flip Academy Flip & Floss guides parents and kids through financial education.
