♻️ Deposit Return Scheme confirmed for 2027 – A win for recycling, but Is it ambitious enough? ♻️
After years of discussion, the UK government has confirmed that a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) will launch in October 2027, aiming to boost recycling rates and cut litter.
💡 How will it work?
🔹 Consumers pay a small deposit when purchasing drinks in plastic or metal containers (150ml-3L).
🔹 They get their deposit back when they return the empty container to a collection point.
🔹 A Deposit Management Organisation will oversee the scheme, funded by producers.
🌍 The potential impact
✅ Countries with DRS achieve recycling rates of up to 98% (Germany leads the way!).
✅ The scheme could reduce billions of wasted drinks containers every year.
✅ £10bn+ investment and 21,000 new jobs expected in the circular economy.
🚨 But what about glass?
While Wales and Scotland plan to include glass bottles, England and Northern Ireland will not. This has sparked criticism from green groups who argue that excluding glass undermines the scheme’s impact.
🔊 Industry reactions
🌱 Allison Ogden-Newton MA FRSA, Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy:
"A Deposit Return Scheme really is a silver bullet that will get plastic drinks bottles and aluminium cans out of our parks, off our streets, and away from our rivers and seas. This legislation will save taxpayers millions in clean-up costs and give recycling a real shot in the arm."
🌊 Sandy Luk, Chief Executive, Marine Conservation Society:
"Last year, 97% of surveyed UK beaches were polluted with bottles and cans. DRS will not only boost recycling but also significantly reduce this kind of pollution. Today marks a fantastic win for our seas."
💬 The big question:
Will a delayed and glass-free DRS be enough to drive real change?
The UK is years behind other nations in rolling out a Deposit Return Scheme. Now, with a clear timeline, the challenge is to design a system that truly works—for the environment, consumers, and businesses.
What do you think? Is this scheme ambitious enough, or should we push for more? Let’s discuss! ⬇️

10moInteresting to see that what works elsewhere does not exist at home. Deposit systems have been established in other countries for almost centuries - hope they will be made work in the UK soon. #circularity #circulareconomy #returnablepackaging
