If your company's invoicing process involves multiple stages and often results in late payments, it isn't fit for purpose. This is a DE&I issue. Many companies now make freelancers fill in lengthy online forms, upload multiple documents and e-sign legal agreements, which are then bounced around different departments with no clear point of contact for chasing payment. The admin alone can sometimes take hours, just to get paid for work that's already been done. This is a choice. Companies are forcing freelancers to do work they should be handling internally as a cost-cutting exercise. Over 30% of creative industry workers are freelancers. This disproportionately affects those from Working Class backgrounds, as we know that stable full time jobs are often out of reach to minority groups. The confusion and delays these systems cause put immense pressure on freelancers' finances and relationships, completely unfairly. If this sounds like your employer, please consider raising this as a DE&I issue, offering prior notice and support to freelancers having to jump through hoops to be paid. This is a problem most of my network has faced and still deals with. Companies often don’t appreciate the hours of admin it takes to chase late invoices and when you multiply this across several from different projects/clients it presents a significant workload on top of other responsibilities. Also an issue for SME’s who are particularly vulernable to closure when facing interruptions to cashflow. Glad to see a productive and open conversation being started here.
