"Cities Aren't Unwritten" In her 2018 article in the Tyee, Melody Ma argues that "cities are not blank canvases. They are organic living beings that reflect their people and their cultures, histories and aspirations." This is her counterpoint to the massive Oakridge Mall redevelopment in the heart of Vancouver, which she sees as "part of a global pattern of imposing formulaic, placeless mega-developments." It seems a very timely (re-)read as we continue planning the future of the Metro Vancouver region - i.e., the bold and imaginative new cities emerging on former shopping centre parking lots, and the large transit-oriented developments on both greenfield and brownfield parcels; and the more 'surgical' precision that will be needed to evolve our established inner-city neighbourhoods. https://lnkd.in/gDYJ5nc9

As we wrap up the year, it’s a natural time to pause and reflect, not just on achievements but on the deeper “why” behind them. What motivates us to seek change? Why are cities turning to #DoughnutEconomics to shape their future? The "why" is a powerful compass for reimagining how we thrive personally and collectively, balancing individual, social and ecological needs, and reshaping what success looks like. For #London, a major financial centre and European economic powerhouse, this is an invitation to dream big. It’s about the steps we can take toward a city that truly reflects our shared purpose - a city built on equity, care and regeneration. As you reflect on your path, consider: what steps in your journey echo this shared vision of a better London? Let’s play an intentional game: if you had to choose just one, what would be the word aligned with your purpose to inspire your actions in 2025? Share your special word in the comments and inspire others! #LondonDoughnut #PurposeDriven #BetterFutures #RegenerativeEconomy

If you are a resident of the City of Toronto, please take a moment to complete this survey to provide feedback on the City's Circular Economy Road Map project. https://lnkd.in/gZm-n3BP. And for those who have asked me what a circular economy even is, take a quick read here to find out :)
The City of Toronto is developing its first Circular Economy Road Map and we want your input! Toronto's efforts to transition to a circular economy will help build a resilient, inclusive, green and prosperous future for Toronto residents and businesses. Given the importance of partnerships and collaboration to achieve this goal, the City wants to work with residents, community organizations, and industry to inform our 10-year strategy. For this first phase of consultation, residents of Toronto are invited to complete an online survey at toronto.ca/circulareconomy by July 28. If you are a researcher or represent a business, community agency, environmental group, and would like to provide input on the project, please contact hello@saffy.ca to receive a link for the subject matter expert/industry specific survey. The City is also creating a Community Advisory Committee made up of community members and residents who will provide feedback, opinions, and guidance on the project. No previous experience is required. Apply at toronto.ca/circulareconomy by July 28.
