It’s all systems go at Commonwealth Fusion Systems. In just the last six months, we have: ✔️ Doubled the build rate on our toroidal field (TF) and poloidal field (PF) magnet manufacturing lines, and finished manufacturing our Central Solenoid Model Coil (CSMC). ✔️ Surpassed 800 employees, becoming one of the world’s largest fusion organizations. ✔️ Signed our Milestone Agreement with DOE to validate our path toward operating a fusion power plant. We’re still in the early chapters, but it's getting more and more engrossing. In the next six months, we’ll keep building SPARC and plan to announce the site for the first ARC fusion power plant. Direct Energy Conversion. Aneutronic fusion. Let's consider the following configuration: 1.Large superconducting inductive energy storage (low temperature superconductors have cost 10 kA/m max, high temperature 50-100 kA/m) 2. Many medium size water electrolysers with high current thyrostors 3. Toroidal screw pinch fusion reactor (pulse reactor using both - toroidal and poloiadal currents simultaneously) with very strong 20 Tesla high inductance magnets. Let's say that we conduct in reactor the certain type of aneutronic fusion. How should that work? Initialy thank to time dependent magnetic field plasma will squeeze (pinch) and energy will flow from energy storage to the magnets. But after ignition of reaction plasma will expand against magnetic field thus inducing current in magnets. And energy will flow back to energy storage. Excess energy will dissipated by water electrolysers including in power supply circuits. When needed they are connected in series and when needed in parallel. "The energy added by the fusion reactions generates a surge in magnetic force, which pushes back on the reactor’s magnets. This extra magnetic force is then converted directly into electricity. If everything works as intended, Helion’s reactor will generate more electricity from that magnetic burst than it needed to power the magnets in the first place.
