An amazing evening at The Conduit being inspired by the discussion between Christiana Figueres and Paul Polman with BDO UK LLP colleagues from the #ESGhub and #IIDA Some takeaway on the gloomy state of affairs: 🔥 Last year, for the first time we had a breach of the 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. The science says a sustained average temperature of 1.5 degrees will make the world an unstable place and uninsurable. 🏛 Politics is going to be difficult in the next decade and there needs to be an effort to fight against political dogma. 📅 Short termism in investment doesn't help with the fight against climate 🥗 The food system is broken before the true cost of food is 2-3 time the monetary cost, i.e. affects on biodiversity, land etc which are not considered in the monetary value. Some things that have inspired me as a call to action: ⛓ Companies need to understand their responsibilities throughout the value chain, including scope 3 (being fully responsible) 🔋 We need to support nature through the 3Rs - Relief, Restore, Regenerate 😊 We need to remain resilient and have hope. The predominant doom and gloom is not helping as it leads us to cut our agency. Doom and gloom is the new climate denial - leading to not doing anything about it. There is no guarantee we are going to get to where we want to get to. However, if we don’t apply everything that we can, we will guarantee to fail. We should treat this as an opportunity to be optimistic in contributing the positive change. #ESG #sustainability #hope #parisagreement
