Today, we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day theme is "Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence." The importance of nonviolence and civil disobedience during the Civil Rights movement was inspired by Mahatma Ghandi and adopted by U.S. civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. According to this article (https://lnkd.in/er8CV7xA), Dr. King initially viewed nonviolent tactics used by Freedom Riders as too risky. “The success of the Freedom Rides showed that nonviolent direct action could do more than simply claim the moral high ground; in many situations, it could deliver better tactical results than either violent confrontation or gradual change through established legal mechanisms.” Although dangerous and life-threatening at times, Martin Luther King Jr. eventually adopted and supported the civil disobedience tactics after he saw how effective the strategy was for the Freedom Rides. This led to the nonviolent actions of the Birmingham campaign of 1963 and the Selma to Montgomery marches for voting rights of 1965. Many people, both Black and white, were willing to die to assure future generations had a better life. #MLKDay #MartinLutherKingJr #equityandinclusion #adriandominicansisters

If Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were here today, he’d likely stand at a podium, look out over the world, and speak with both hope and urgency. He’d remind us to celebrate the progress we’ve made—milestones like greater diversity in leadership, global movements for justice, and new generations of changemakers inspired by his dream. He’d recognize the victories: expanded civil rights, growing awareness of systemic inequalities, and the power of peaceful protest echoing his legacy. But Dr. King wouldn’t stop there. He’d call out the persistent struggles: racial and economic inequality, the widening gap between the wealthy and poor, political division, and violence that tears at the fabric of our communities. He’d grieve the hatred, but he’d remind us that “hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” He’d challenge us to recommit to the work—to build a world where justice, equity, and opportunity are not just aspirations but realities. Today, let’s honor Dr. King’s legacy by asking ourselves: What are we individually and collectively doing to bend the arc of the moral universe closer to justice? And more importantly, take actions to support that effort. His dream lives on, but it requires all of us to make it real. #MLK #KeepTheDreamAlive #SocialJustice #EqualityForAll
