The language of lived experience is found in the books we read. Each story offers a glimpse into realities that often go unheard. I enjoy sharing these voices, especially those silenced by mainstream narratives. I’m now guided to practice creating collective community voices. This learning journey invites us to support others as they strive to thrive and work toward freedom from oppressive systems. Engaging with intersectional, anti-colonial literature fills me with hope. Though we live with grief daily, this engagement opens the door to potential change. It's time to challenge colonial end-of-life and cemetery models and recognise diverse cultural and faith practices in death care. Let’s create spaces that honour all lives and the stories they carry. Before colonization, Two-Spirit people held many highly valued roles within community. Today, many of the teachings about the significant spiritual gifts of Two-Spirit people and their traditional roles are lost. As a result, many Two-Spirit youth are no longer taught that their difference is their gift. Today there are very few Two-Spirit Métis knowledge keepers who are willing to openly discuss their experiences. Now, more than ever, it is important to pass on teachings about the integral role of Two-Spirit people in the Métis community. Strong allyship also plays a crucial role; by taking the time to learn about Two-Spirit people, they help reduce discrimination, prejudice, and harassment against them. Many individuals find themselves caught between the joys of daily life and the heavy realities of oppression, fear, and hunger. This struggle becomes part of their story, revealing a remarkable collective resilience in the face of adversity. Acknowledging the beauty amidst these challenges is vital, as it not only fosters hope but also inspires us with the strength of these communities — even when circumstances seem hopeless and inescapable. I've found that learning to understand this delicate balance makes it possible to better appreciate the gifts life brings us whilst also empowering us to call for change. This advocacy is not just a choice but a responsibility we all share as human beings. Together, we can strive for a world where beauty triumphs over suffering and no one has to bear the burden of hardship.
