Congratulations to Rowlett & Company, LLC, Community Action Partnership of North Alabama, The Bennett Group, and Bob Morrow Construction on this beautiful community!

Big news in Boston Real Estate- Dorchester's St. Mary's Center is set to receive a new affordable housing facility. With 40 units up for grabs, this is a promising model combining low-income housing, community, and commerce. But it does spark questions. In yesterday's Calgary Herald there is an article about Trellis Society's proposed development of a 50 unit affordable housing building. As has been the case for much of the negative reaction to the initiative, it is both ill-informed and not about a playground. It is an important read, because it helps highlight the very real NIMBYism that closes the door on those who have no place to live by those that have long enjoyed the privilege of home. In short, it protects the past even if it means that families will remain homeless. You can read it here: https://lnkd.in/d_V_SCvp There is also a petition to 'save the park' that includes 15 different paragraphs on the rationale to oppose the 50 homes. Though there is one paragraph that talks about the value of having access to the park, it uses the 14 other paragraphs to spell out NIMBYism in full: negatively impact OUR quality of life, be unsightly, disruptive and affect home values, disrupt harmony and lead to interpersonal conflict, block views and have sun ‘bouncing off windows,' be an invasion of privacy, create awful sounds of construction and detritus and clutter, new neighbours will add garbage, smells, noise and arguing, bring risks to first responders and create a claustrophobic atmosphere. So, not so much about a park after all. In our city, and across the country, there is a housing crisis. When you read this petition and the article in the Herald, you can see why that might be. Those with back yards want to make sure that any new development is not in theirs. The research is clear: mixed-income housing is key to upLifting Orlando. 📊 70% of young adult Americans said that it was harder for them to afford a home than it was for their parents’ generation. In October 2021, about half of Americans (49%) said this was a major problem where they live—and this is up 10 percentage points from early 2018. Affording a home is now an American challenge; we need one another to learn how to handle this challenge best. Regional Rail connects communities and opportunities across Greater Philadelphia. The Free2Be Fund at the Philadelphia Foundation supported essential safety upgrades and the addition of protective fencing around the Native Educational Garden at Highland Avenue Station. This effort, in conjunction with the Chestnut Hill Train Stations Native Gardens initiative, highlights the importance of safeguarding important parts of our community and history.
