As we welcome the vibrant blossoms of spring, our hearts and doors open to the joyful spirit of Norwuz – an ancient festival that symbolizes renewal and unity. 🌱☀️ At The Roosevelt Group of Companies, we're harnessing this celebratory time to foster a culture of diversity and togetherness. Norwuz reminds us that no matter our background, we all share the rhythm of nature's seasons. In this time of rejuvenation, it's fitting we strengthen our professional garden by seeding strong connections and collaborations. 🌼 The History of Norwuz is infused in our culture as our staff from Iran help us support the festivities of this once-in-a-lifetime event. 🎉 Norwuz is a celebration that traces its roots back to ancient Persia, now modern-day Iran, and has been observed for over 3,000 years. This festival marks the beginning of spring and represents new beginnings, hope, and prosperity. It is also a time to gather with loved ones, exchange gifts and share traditional meals. 💐 This year, as we continue to navigate the challenges brought by geopolitical issues and differences, Norwuz takes on an even more significant meaning. It reminds us that despite our differences, we can come together in unity and celebrate the beauty of life. At The Roosevelt Group of Companies, diversity is at the core of our values. We recognize and embrace the diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives of our employees, clients and partners. 🌎 We believe that embracing diversity not only creates a more inclusive workplace but also fosters creativity, innovation, and growth. During this Norwuz season, we encourage everyone to take a moment to connect with someone from a different background or culture. #Norwuz #SpringCelebrations #DiversityInUnity

“Such interactions and people-to-people exchanges that span cultures and sectors not only help produce new human stories and experiences, but also help weave new ties of friendship connecting us to a shared future. 更多的故事就在“面对面”和“人与人”的交流中产生,跨国界和跨领域的交流不仅产生故事,还产生新的纽带,去联结未来。” Read Zijing Liu and Jiapei Fu’s account of the diverse backgrounds, cultural perspectives, and personal anecdotes that each delegate brought to this cross-cultural exchange aiming to build connections and mutual understanding. As Heritage Day approaches, it's essential to address the concerns and debates surrounding cultural celebrations in our schools. The question often arises: should children wholeheartedly celebrate their diverse cultures, or does the fear of cultural appropriation cast a shadow over these festivities? In a nation as beautifully diverse as South Africa, celebrating our rich tapestry of cultures is undeniably wonderful. Yet, it's equally important to highlight our shared cultural heritage, moving away from fear-based approaches and embracing the joy of celebrating one another. Let me share a personal anecdote to shed light on this matter. One of my closest friends is of a different race, and on my upcoming wedding day, she'll proudly wear traditional outfits that I've chosen for all my friends. Should we fear accusations of cultural appropriation when these images find their way onto social media? Context matters greatly in this situation. It's my personal choice to have her join me in these outfits on my special day. Should someone lacking that context be quick to label it as culturally inappropriate? I believe not. There's ample room for open, scenario-based discussions to help us navigate the complexities of cultural expression and appreciation. Although I hold a deep appreciation for Heritage Day, I've witnessed many parents and children grappling with uncertainty. Questions arise: "What constitutes my culture? Is a rugby jersey a part of my culture, or is it a representation of a shared South African identity?" The conversation around cultural appropriation must be contextual. It's imperative to consider the historical context of cultures being devalued and the impact of privilege in validating certain cultures over others. This is where our focus should lie – discussing the dynamics of power and privilege that influence how cultures are perceived and celebrated. A significant issue does exist, where individuals misuse their power to exploit cultures and traditions that were historically marginalized. This is a conversation worth having – addressing those who capitalize on cultures and the need to rectify past injustices. In closing, I hope this Heritage Month inspires courage in all of us to celebrate our diverse heritage, share our stories, and embrace the beauty that South Africa has to offer. Happy Heritage Month!

#Garma is an important annual meeting of cultures up here in Arnhem Land. We've got lots of eyes on our region at the moment, who are getting to experience the unique art, music and ceremony of Yolngu culture. What many people won't understand is that Culture is a year-round undertaking for Yolngu communities. Ceremony is a constant presence across communities, it is a constant reality of life for Yolngu. While Garma is a meticulously administered and resourced event - most of the time ceremony is anything but this. People overcome massive logistical challenges - crossing vast distances with limited transportation, communicating plans through crackly communal phone lines, making sure that all the right people can be present for ceremony to be performed. This is without mentioning the ceremonies themselves, which can be physically and emotionally draining for everyone involved. Despite this - these ceremonies take place because they are an essential part of Yolngu life, no matter how much balanda culture pressures change. From a CDP perspective, our role in celebrating this culture lies in recognising the important occupation that this culture represents for our participants. When we place people in employment that cannot be flexible around these obligations, the employment will never be successful. When we try and enforce strict training schedules or CDP Activities that conflict with these cultural obligations, we will fail and our participants will suffer. Excitingly, out in East Arnhem Land ALPA CDP are trialling new methods of recognising the contributions of Job Seekers who are crucial to these "unseen" ceremonies. Under new pathways, we are looking to compensate cultural leaders for whom regular paid work has been impossible because of their cultural obligations. We are also working with key employers to assist them to support ceremony leaders where their standard leave entitlements are insufficient. I'm looking forward to having more to report on this as our Pathways trial continues. Photo is from the 15th Anniversary of Sea Rights ceremony I was lucky enough to attend in the East Arnhem community of Baniyala.

"As we've discussed, defining a clear vision, thorough research, and effective marketing are vital elements for drawing a diverse audience and leaving a lasting impact on the community. Prioritizing inclusivity, sustainability, and safety is key to crafting a memorable and enriching experience for all attendees." Cultural events are great ways to expose a large audience to various cultures that they otherwise would not have even been aware of. I find the attached article to be a clear, concise list of everything that needs to be considered to execute a successful event. I am especially pleased that the needs of the disability community are included in the list. Far too often the needs of this community are overlooked, and the community is denied access to events. I thoroughly enjoy and feel deep passion for these mind expanding events. What do you like the most about attending a #CulturalEvent? I encourage you to share your thoughts in the comments. https://lnkd.in/dCgNPsjv
