In December 2023, I was invited by Courtney Christensen from Kansas City Public Library to give a keynote to open their 150th anniversary celebrations. In January I learned that ART IN THE LOOP FOUNDATION, the public art program for #KansasCity run by Downtown Council of Kansas City, had been so inspired by the talk that they had chosen #convivencia as the theme for their public art summer with KC STREETCAR AUTHORITY. This is the impact that I hoped to see from my research. In my latest newsletter, Ann Holliday and Edwing Mendez talk about how the capability of #coexistence transformed into more than 20 performances and installations. I find this story of Kansas City so inspiring. The big takeaways from it are: 1. There is no greater tool for communicating values than #publicart. 2. Public authorities have power and should use their power on how public spaces are used as a platform for the arts. 3. The biggest investments in the arts are not done by growing the cultural budget but incorporating the arts into public infrastructure. 4. Even when working on serious subjects, like downturn revitalization, do not forget play and wonder. Read the entire article here: https://lnkd.in/e6P3Y-wc

In June 2021, to mark California's reopening, we hosted "REBIRTH," a dynamic industry event that spanned all 50,000 square feet of Ciel Creative Space. Our mission was clear: reunite the community after over a year of isolation. A major focus of REBIRTH was supporting local businesses that had suffered tremendous losses during the shelter-in-place orders. Partnering with a local, woman-of-color-owned event agency, Make it Mariko, we brought together dozens of local businesses, artists, caterers, musicians, and more to breathe life back into the space. Ready to host your next event in our space? Book here: https://lnkd.in/gkRhK4Pc

In this episode, Sophie Evans, Director of Customer Delivery at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, delves into the concept of co-creation and its impact on building community bonds. Here are the key takeaways from your conversation: Co-Design with Communities: Sophie emphasizes the importance of inclusive community engagement. Rather than merely informing and pitching ideas, cities should co-design solutions with their residents. Successful co-design sessions involve creating spaces where residents feel like true collaborators. This approach fosters deep partnership and trust building. Place-Based Design: Cities should step outside the walls of City Hall and meet residents where they are. Going into communities empowers residents and prioritizes their needs. By designing inclusive spaces, cities can better address problems that impact marginalized residents. Adapting to Residents’ Needs: Co-creation requires flexibility. City teams must adjust in real time to navigate accessibility and equity concerns. Listening to residents and adapting accordingly ensures meaningful collaboration. Tapping into Play: Unleashing creativity during co-design sessions is essential. Encouraging play allows for innovative solutions. Co-design is not only about problem-solving but also about fostering democracy in practice. Remember, co-creation is a collaborative process that involves ongoing cooperation and collaboration from residents, stakeholders, and local authorities. It’s about designing, implementing, and managing spaces, activities, and decision-making processes together. This episode explores how the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea embraced these principles to strengthen community bonds and enhance services. 🎙️🌟 #truthaboutlocalgovernment

I help creative business people find their voice to build their community. I’m also the Thursday newsletter paperboy 🗞
We never talk about our homes as places attached to our work. This is my town. It doesn't look very nice here does it? A bus station pic fails to give gravitas and a year or so ago, the building on the right was empty space. Poole was where I was born and as adults, we start to see our homes through a different lens. For me, I treat home as my playground. We test out ideas, we see what works, we invite people to join in (sea swim anyone?). When your work becomes a reflection of where you live, it creates impact. We have 200 people heading down at the end of April for Creator Day. It's on the left side at Lighthouse - Arts and Entertainment | Poole and on the right is FOUNDRY. We have Failed Nights there the evening before the event to welcome everyone. The idea is to turn this part of Poole into a 'precinct' for Creator Day. When you embody what you advocate in your own space, vocalising connections and activities, you create belonging within the town (or city) you are part of. This strength is pivotal for talent retention, attractiveness to others, and overall economic health within the community. Online visibility is still important, but grounding your work in your local landscape is a powerful strategy.
