Independent, rigorous, local journalism is the lifeblood of an informed and engaged community. It shines a light on important issues, holds power to account, and helps citizens make informed decisions about their lives and their communities. In our rapidly changing media landscape, supporting quality local news has never been more crucial. Salish Current is a nonpartisan, nonprofit online news organization serving Whatcom, San Juan, and Skagit counties. With a commitment to fact-based reporting and a focus on local government, public health, the environment, and social justice, Salish Current fills a vital need for in-depth, independent journalism in our region. Their team of experienced reporters and editors work hard to bring important stories to light, fostering a more informed and connected community. And this month, they are the recipient of our Community Shopping Days donations. There are two ways you can support Salish Current while shopping at the Co-op : • 2% Saturdays: Shop with us this Saturday, Oct. 19. We’ll donate 2% of the day’s sales directly to Salish Current. • Donate the Difference: Through October, round up your purchase at the register. 100% of these donations go to Salish Current. I would appreciate your help. I'm compiling a list of nonprofit news sites you visit because you trust the news coverage. I'm looking for nonprofits with fair, truthful, and balanced coverage, where donations help them function, and NO BILLIONAIRE OWNER decides what they cover. I will publish my list soon because the public needs it now more than ever. I know many out there read sites that do good journalism. If you are working for one or have started one, please let me know. Please include any hyperlocals. I appreciate the likes, but please REPOST now to reach your network. The public needs this, and I want to bring more donations to these sites to keep them going. #CallingAllJournalists #Truth #LocalNews #journalism

There’s plenty of food in America; yet 1 in 7 people (including 1 in 5 kids) still don’t have the food they need to thrive so we’re doing something a little different this year. To commemorate our third annual National Traffic Door Day, which celebrates traffic doors and the businesses that use them to keep customers and employees safe, we want to make a positive impact in the communities where we operate and reside. As part of our commitment to giving back, we are delighted to announce our support for Feeding America during the month of September, in observance of #HungerActionMonth. For every action taken, including posting a selfie with a traffic door, following the Chase & Eliason LinkedIn pages, liking our social media posts, and sharing our content, we will donate $10 to Feeding America. Furthermore, on September 28, we will double our contributions for each action performed. We believe that by coming together and taking these simple actions, we can make a meaningful difference in the fight against hunger. Join us in this initiative and help us make a positive impact in the lives of those in need. Together, we can create a brighter future for our communities. In a city as diverse as Los Angeles, smaller media outlets play a vital role in informing and connecting our communities. These outlets often tell stories that larger platforms overlook—stories that resonate deeply with the people they serve. But supporting these local voices goes beyond just donations. It’s about ensuring our clients see the value in: ✅ Advertising with them to sustain their operations ✅ Providing reporters with access to thought leaders on emerging issues ✅ Inviting them to events where they can connect with social and political influencers When we uplift these outlets, we’re not just supporting media—we’re fostering stronger, more informed communities. Let’s keep the conversations going and the connections growing. If you’re looking for a way to make a difference, this is it. Let’s champion AfroLA and ensure these critical stories continue to be told. #SupportLocalMedia #DiversityInMedia #CommunityImpact
As you probably know I have been working with a small but mighty team to build AfroLA. In 2024 we produced award-winning journalism. In 2025 there is more work to do. Before the clock strikes midnight Dec. 31, and we close the book on 2024, your gift to AfroLA can be triple matched! We are only $800 away from meeting our fundraising goal of $5,000 from individual donors. With your help, that $5k will become $15k for us – helping us kick off 2025 right. https://lnkd.in/eQEAJajR

Copywriting for charities can be quite challenging. A big reason? Most often, the writer is younger and prone to "smart" writing and less likely to tap into feeling-based language connecting to the donor's identity. Here's one very important tidbit from the Institute for Sustainable Philanthropy: "Associating the right kind of emotion with the right kind of identity is particularly important for donors aged between 65 and 85 because their decisions are more feeling-based than thinking-based, in comparison to people between 18 and 35 (Mikels et al, 2010)."

I love making these 60 second success stories for two reasons: 1. It's amusing to see how fast I can talk when I have a deadline of 60 seconds. ⏰ (Full disclosure, I did have to put this video on 1.1 speed to hit the goal time!) 2. From the marketing department, it's not often that I have the opportunity to deep dive the stories our customers tell. When I make these, I truly get to understand the obstacles our nonprofit storytellers face & how we help overcome them. 🦊 What story can you tell in 60 seconds? #nonprofitstorytelling #memoryfox
While the “YMCA” brand is extensively known, one challenge many YMCAs face is that community members do not know how much they rely on volunteers to perform their mission. The YMCA of Northern Alberta sought a way to combat that misconception head-on, in order to boost volunteer recruitment as well as find a unique way to inspire more donations. They know information about volunteering can be readily found on a website or social channels, but they understand stock photos don't convey the full message. They knew real stories from real people would be exceedingly more impactful. So, they set out to collect authentic, boots-on-the-ground volunteer testimonials, without the cost of traditional videographers and interview teams. That’s where MemoryFox came in. 🦊 Here's their success story, in 60 seconds ⬇ Or, check out the full story here: https://lnkd.in/ggif8Fdz #ymca #nonprofitstorytelling

Oh my god, this. The capitalist and patriarchal belief that people working in the third sector should do so for next to nothing mirrors how little we value care and how much we expect sacrifice from the "feminine" spaces in our society. VCSE organisations, in the wake of endemic public sector shortfalls and ongoing private sector extraction, are taking on society's equivalent of domestic and emotional labour. Just like teachers, nurses and civil servants, why do we believe people working in communities, charity and social enterprises should do so out of the goodness of their heart? Financially, they're often only in a *marginally* better position than those they exist to support. The only organisations which disadvantaged, marginalised and vulnerable communities trust are charities, and they reason everyone else is no longer willing or able to give is because work no longer pays and civil service hinders rather than help the people it exists to serve. Instead of compounding and upholding the neoliberal bollocks around "big society", what if we all - journalists included - actually asked people what they were experiencing, rather than make assumptions and pushing agendas?
The Times didn’t publish my Letter to the editor about this piece so I thought I would pop it here. Anyone else tired of this lazy and prejudiced journalism? —- Sir, Although there have been some disturbing stories from a handful of charities this last week, they are not, despite inferences from Libby Purves ("Charities need to regain trust or risk demise"), reflective of the other 170,000 not for profit organisations that work tirelessly to enrich our society. What is damaging trust is the subjective attacks of journalists that do so without any understanding of the sectors' work on the ground, leaning on outdated and inaccurate anecdotes to generalise about the work of over 1million staff that comprise the Third Sector. As your highly successful Christmas campaign showed last year, when we celebrate the life changing work of charities the public are generous beyond measure. So, the next time Ms Purves wishes to write about charities I'd encourage to go and visit some. She might discover a sector that is holding together the very fabric of society - and she would undoubtedly discover plenty of good. Phil Kerry NW1
