It was a pleasure hosting the Middlesex County NAACP's Ida M. Masselli Scholarship award ceremony at our Middletown health center Wednesday night. Eight outstanding students were awarded scholarships to advance their education.
The Ida M. Masselli Scholarship Fund exists to support the educational aspirations of young people living in the fifteen towns of Middlesex County, Connecticut and was established by CHC Founder, President & CEO Mark Masselli in honor of his late mother, Ida Masselli.
Congratulations to those awarded!

10 good tips for mega-donors who want to push universities to embrace the donor’s “agenda.” Whether donors should reconsider their agenda or work collaboratively with warring constituencies is another matter. In a time of cultural and political turmoil, the issues are so heated as to make consensus building very difficult. As a former college professor, I have one perspective, as a nonproft gift planner another, as a client advisor a third, and as a citizen a fourth. My own internal dialogues remain unsettled.

A growing chorus of alumni and donors are expressing dismay at the state of universities. Now more than ever, donors can step up and change the trajectory of their institutions. Using her expertise, Joanne Florino compiled a list of top ten tips for higher education donors to make values-aligned, high-impact grantmaking in higher education.

This piece in the NACAC journal regarding the path from enrollment to the presidency is spot on. I truly think it is one of the few divisions where you not just work alongside everyone, you actually have to understand and often are engaged with the core functions in almost every area -- from new academic programs to complex financial planning to technology systems to facilities to retention and student success.
I think institutions with presidents who have a deep understanding of the non-academic functions are better positioned to handle the rapid changes happening and coming to higher education.
This quote at the end of the piece really says it all: "Admission provides great exposure to the entire institution because by nature of the job, you have to learn about financial aid, academics, finance, and every area of a college. But you also have to understand that the outcome of what you do impacts all those other areas." - Matthew Whelan
It's time to hold our politicians accountable and to get personally involved. A solid post-secondary education system is part of our Cdn foundation for a successful economy and for a bright future for our children and grandchildren. Capping tuition and reducing government funding is creating unsustainable financial pressures at our Canadian universities and colleges. What can we do?
1) Let your local politicians know that you are expecting the Ontario government to respond to the recommendations included in the blue-ribbon panel (https://lnkd.in/gdv-nDai)
2) Support your alma mater and /or local universities and colleges with donations.

"David Rowe, the In Trust Center’s project director for the Governance Initiative and senior advisor for governance and strategy said that this could be groundbreaking."
In the first research of its kind to be conducted since 2012, In Trust Center for Theological Schools and The Association of Theological Schools, backed by Lilly Endowment, are teaming up to answer 3 fundamental questions according to In Trust president Amy Kardash:
"What does governance in theological schools need to look like to best serve and support mission vitality in theological schools?
What are the practices and models of high-functioning boards?
In what ways can we best offer support and resources to this critical stakeholder group as they advance and adapt their governance practices?"
I am looking forward to working with Amy, Debbie Gin, David C. Wang, and Theresa Griffith as well as the members of the advisory group to launch this vital study in the coming weeks.
Trustees, presidents, and deans of the theological schools, be on the look out for a survey in the coming weeks. Your responses are crucial to the success of this project.

“The topic of Decision Education in K-12 classrooms should be on the mind of every parent, teacher, and local, state, and federal government official. This substantial investment in research will help the Alliance establish a knowledge base to understand and implement the most effective ways to bring Decision Education to K-12 classrooms.” - Advisory Council Member Ali Abbas, Ph.D., on our $12.5 million investment to support current and future research efforts aimed at understanding the impact of Decision Education.

Gov. Pritzker’s proposed FY25 budget includes significant investments in young learners and early childhood, but not nearly enough for the Early Childhood Access Consortium for Equity, a program to help educators get degrees and credentials.
Angela Farwig, IAFC’s Vice President of Public Policy, Advocacy, & Research, called for more state investment in the ECACE in a Letter to the Editor for the Chicago Sun-Times. Angela penned the Letter to the Editor alongside Maya Portillo, Senior Early Childhood Policy Advisor at Advance Illinois, and Catherine Main, Senior Lecturer and Director of Early Childhood Education at the University of Illinois Chicago.

It was an awesome responsibility to take the lead on writing this grant, and it will be an even greater one to lead it over the next 5 years. I'm deeply grateful to Farmingdale State College to be given this opportunity to expand and deepen the commitment and connection we have to our students through the creation of an Office of First Year and Transfer Year Experience. Ready and up for the challenge.
Universities are noisy, raucous places. A student beginning their career is bombarded with information from the moment they are accepted to the first day of classes - and the real work hasn't even begun. Many universities have no "front door" but rather a bunch of ingresses that can be confusing and even debilitating. For the first generation student, or for the student who doesn't have the cultural capital to navigate this crucial period in a college career, it can lead to disaster.
The goal of EMERGE is not simple - but it is straightforward. It's to address the problem described above.
How?
➡ EMERGE will serve a total of 1250 students over 5 years (750 FTFT, 500 Transfer).
➡ EMERGE will allow the College to create an Office of First Year and Transfer Year Experience (OFY/TYE), which does not currently exist, that will be staffed with a Coordinator, two academic success coaches, one wellness coach, and administrative support.
➡ After 5 years, the goal is that OFY/TYE will serve EVERY incoming hashtag
#farmingdale student.
➡ EMERGE calls for many curricular innovations, including: relying on the College's Concurrent Enrollment program to support college-readiness, implementing First-year Learning Communities, and replacing developmental courses in Math and Writing with credit-bearing co-requisite courses.
➡EMERGE erects co- and extra-curricular programming that has been a mainstay of Farmingdale's success in other areas: holistic advising and wrap-around support services; academic tutoring and coaching in math, writing, ELL, and other content areas; leadership, professional development, and financial literacy coaching; summer and winter undergraduate research experiences as well as internships, civic engagement, and applied learning opportunities.
➡ Lastly, EMERGE provides substantial onboarding through FTFT and Transfer Orientations for students as well as professional development for faculty around learning communities and culturally responsive pedagogies.
Lots of moving parts. One vision and one goal. Let's get to work.
