The veteran suicide rate is currently 1.5 times the rate of the general population and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says its top clinical priority is preventing suicide among all those who have served. Is the way we're going about suicide prevention all wrong? And how are those misperceptions affecting efforts to stop veteran suicides? Clinical psychologist and Iraq War Veteran Craig Bryan joins our hosts Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter to discuss this issue. He's the author of “Rethinking Suicide: Why Prevention Fails, and How We Can Do Better” and says we need a better focus on firearm safety. In 2021, 72% of veteran suicides involved firearms. Hear more from Craig, in a new episode of Conversations on Health Care: chc1.co/Bryan-731.

FREE EMERGENCY SUICIDE PREVENTION CARE FOR VETERANS In the first year of this federal program, nearly 50,000 veterans took advantage of free emergency suicide prevention care. Yet many still don't know this benefit exists. Even veterans who are not enrolled in the VA, can now go to any VA or non-VA emergency room for free emergent suicidal care or care related to sexual trauma experienced while in uniform. Transportation costs are also covered. Please share this article with your networks and help get the word out to all our veterans so they aware of this benefit. While we wish it wasn't needed, this benefit may very well save lives. To read the article: https://lnkd.in/g7aAJBCU #suicideprevention #veterans

Nearly 34 years of war and trauma. Weapons training and access. Use of firearms. From USA Today newspaper: U.S. soldiers were almost nine times more likely to die by suicide than by enemy fire, according to a Pentagon study for the five-year period ending in 2019. The study, published in May by the Defense Health Agency, found that suicide was the leading cause of death among active-duty soldiers from 2014 to 2019. There were 883 suicide deaths during that time period. Accidents were the No. 2 cause with 814 deaths. There were 96 combat deaths.

In 2021 in England and Wales, out of 5,175 suicides in those aged 16 years and over, 253 suicides occurred in UK armed forces veterans. Of the 253 UK armed forces veteran suicides occurring in 2021, 93.7% (237) were male and 6.3% (16) were female. Overall, after accounting for age, there was no evidence of a difference in the rate of suicide between male UK armed forces veterans and the male general population. However, male UK armed forces veterans aged 25 to 44 years had a higher rate of suicide compared with males aged 25 to 44 years in the general population. In the male UK armed forces veteran population, deaths from firearm discharge accounted for 5.9% of suicides in 2021, compared with the male general population where this method accounted for 1.6% of suicides in the same year. https://lnkd.in/eGvHvuFx
