Not only is this a wonderful story, but it also highlights a common theme we hear from people about their careers. Their parents often have different career dreams for their kids, than their kids have for themselves. Most often, parents want their kids to have a profession. Being a doctor, lawyer or engineer usually tops the list. There's a belief that these careers lead to a life of success and financial security - no matter where in the world a person is from. This might be true for many people. But it isn't true for everyone. We hear gut-wrenching stories about the conflict and struggles some individuals have when they tell their parents that they are choosing a different career path than what their parents wanted them to take. No one wants to disappoint their parents. However, there is also a desire to express our true selves and to be happy. Congratulations to all graduates, and… I am glad to share that I graduated with honors from William James College, earning a Masters, Organizational Psychology with a specialization in Organizational Development and Change. This complements the Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching (GCEC) in Leadership Psychology earned here in 2022. These new learnings, disciplines, and adaptive leadership skills have shaped my journey and allow me to bring forward a new dimension in my life’s work. It was this powerful potential and the school’s reputation and commitment to experiential learning that led me to William James College in 2021 to build this new dimension. A few highlights from this journey include: - Inducted in Psi Chi Honor Society, 4.0 GPA - Developed a set of adaptive leadership skills, use-of-self, for organizational diagnostics, design, intervention, transformation and change management to build character, work with people, teams, and organizations in a more powerful way. - Expanded an invaluable network of people, including students, seasoned professionals, advisors, and company founders within the coaching, consulting, business development and high technology space. As a leader, learner, continuing my education and growth journey and earning this second master's degree (RPI 1996) has been a personal goal and commitment. My advice for those on their own learning journey is one day, one assignment at a time. Finally, thank you to my family, friends, instructors, cohort(s), and network who inspired me, stretched me, and expanded my thinking. Especially want to thank Dr. Darlene M. Piva, MA, PsyD, Lynne D. Richer, EdD, GPHR, Dr. Miranda Lane, LPsyD, LCMHC, Ara Haroutiounian and Suzanne Boulos at William James College. You have walked along side with me, and for that I am grateful. Things in our lives that we should celebrate more: 1 → Quitting if something no longer serves us 2 → Doing the “boring” but worthy tasks 3 → Being honest with what you can't do 4 → Brilliant people (not just founders) 5 → Having the guts to take a risk 6 → Talking about your mistakes 7 → Relying on your gut instinct 8 → Bootstrapped businesses 9 → Permitting yourself to fail There is a lot of attention directed at the people & highlights that are the spotlight of all of the growth moments: ~ Businesses that generate big investment ~ Creators with massive influence and following ~ Brands that gained incredible recognition / achievement It’s time to raise awareness of the “unseen” side of our lives. This post is also for those who are doing their best. → Employees → Assistants → Students → Doctors → Interns Often, they do not get enough recognition. To celebrate my birthday, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on some valuable lessons I've learned in the past year. 1. You can live off interest alone if you save enough! (The phrase "in perpetuity" has become my mantra, thanks eCornell.) 2. My salary is my minimum earning potential, not my maximum. 3. There are no rules dictating the scope of your career. You can shift and adapt as much as you want, as long as you embrace the diverse perspective that your unique skillset brings. 4. You don't have to wait until you've "made it" to start giving back. Volunteer for boards, set up mentor calls, write articles. You have a story to tell, and it's worth sharing. 5. Your network doesn't "expire". You can always reach out to old connections that you haven't spoken to in a while. (Bonus: don't just reach out when you want something. Reach out to let them know you are thinking of them.) Here's to another great year. Thanks for being in my network.
