Join the Region IV Public Health Training Center and Trust for America's Health for this upcoming learning opportunity: September 17: Age-Friendly Public Health Systems in Action | 12 pm EST To register: https://buff.ly/3XCd7M2 Over the last 10 years, the number of adults in the U.S. aged 65 and over increased by over 34%, and is expected to grow to 98 million, or 24% of the U.S. population by 2060. Healthy aging has not historically been central to the public health agenda but clearly, public health interventions are at least partly responsible for the longevity we are experiencing today. Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) is working to elevate healthy aging as a core public health function through its Age-Friendly Public Health Systems (AFPHS) movement, based on a framework of six tenets that are guiding public health efforts to improve older adult health and well-being. This web training session will introduce participants to AFPHS, including examples from one local and one state health department that have adopted and implemented APHFS principles.

As a public health educator, advocate, and ally for health equity, I'm passionate about raising awareness and driving meaningful change in our communities. It's no secret that minority communities often experience higher rates of chronic illnesses, lower life expectancies, and barriers to accessing quality healthcare services. Factors such as systemic racism, socioeconomic inequalities, cultural differences, and limited healthcare resources contribute to these disparities, creating complex challenges that demand urgent attention and action. Initiatives such as a health education program aim to empower minority communities through comprehensive health education initiatives tailored to their needs. By providing resources and information, these programs enable individuals to make informed decisions about their health and navigate the healthcare system effectively. https://lnkd.in/gGcYEz_N

This is innovation. It also demonstrates the power of collective responsibility and partnership.

It's now standard for doctors, nurses, and public health folks to be trained to understand and take action on the social determinants of health (SDOH) including racism. But what about judges? Enter Salus Populi--a program of the Northeastern University School of Law. It educates judges about SDOH and "seeks to provide [them] with... a more complete view of the context and constraints that affect litigants who appear in their courts... and to increase judges’ awareness of how their decisions may impact health and health equity." More than 600 judges from 26 states have gone through the training so far, and early data suggest the program is meeting these goals.
