A free legal help hotline is now available for Massachusetts Severe Storms and Flooding survivors. The hotline is available to connect survivors to free legal services in qualifying counties who cannot afford an attorney. Survivors can call (888) 743-5749. Hotline callers may get help with legal issues like: - FEMA and SBA financial benefits - Home repair contracts and property insurance claims - Re-doing wills and other important legal documents destroyed in the disaster - Price gouging, scams, or identity theft - Landlord or tenant problems, or threats of foreclosure - Disability-related access to federal, state, and local disaster programs Survivors can call the hotline anytime and leave a message if calling after hours. Hotline partners cannot help in all cases. For example, we cannot take cases where a settlement could include legal fees or an award. But we can refer those cases to other legal help. For up-to-date information on free legal services for survivors, media members can contact our partners in these languages: English, Spanish. The Disaster Legal Services (DLS) program works with state and local partners to provide free legal help for low-income disaster survivors. The service is a partnership between the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Community Legal Aid, South Coastal Counties Legal Services, Inc., and Disability Law Center.

Reflecting on the Hawaii Wildfires: A Year of Resilience and Lessons Learned As we observe the anniversary of the Hawaii wildfires, we are reminded of the profound impact natural disasters have on our communities. This past year has been one of recovery, resilience, and reflection. The wildfires left a lasting mark on Hawaii, devastating homes, businesses, and lives. Yet, in the face of such adversity, the people of Hawaii showed remarkable strength and unity. For Emergency Legal Responders (ELR), these events highlighted the urgent need for accessible legal assistance after disasters. Many faced challenges with insurance claims, housing disputes, and accessing government aid. Our team remains committed to providing free legal clinics, distributing vital resources, and offering direct support to those in need thanks to collaborating with partners such as Airlink, Inc. and our community partners on the ground. Key Lessons 1. Preparedness is Essential: Communities with emergency plans and resources were better equipped to handle the wildfires' aftermath. ELR has intensified efforts to educate communities on disaster preparedness and legal rights. 2. Collaboration is Vital: The recovery process demonstrated the importance of partnerships. ELR's collaboration with organizations like Airlink has allowed us to extend our reach and impact, ensuring more people receive the help they need. 3. Legal Advocacy Matters: Access to legal support can significantly impact recovery. ELR continues to offer free legal advocacy, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to rebuild their lives. Moving Forward Our commitment to disaster recovery and legal advocacy remains steadfast. The anniversary of the Hawaii wildfires reminds us of the ongoing work needed to build stronger, more resilient communities. ELR is here to support every step of the way. Let’s honor those affected by working toward a future where every community is prepared, supported, and resilient. Together, we can make a difference.

The storms that caused significant damage and disruption throughout several areas of Melbourne yesterday saw almost half a million homes with no power and caused damage to roads, homes and infrastructure. ECLC is deeply concerned for the community in various areas particularly in the Yarra Ranges that are still without power. ECLC’s Yarra Ranges office is currently closed for safety reasons. To assist people to move from crisis to recovery, Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC) has released a legal help check tool that walks people through a list of common issues and guides them to get assistance where needed. The Disaster Recovery Legal Help Check asks residents to consider issues around safety, housing, insurance, employment, children and other areas. Going through the check can help identify new issues or ones that may have been exacerbated by the impact of the storms. For example, many people may not realise that legal advice could help with lodging insurance claims or managing employment issues. Family violence can also increase in the aftermath of a disaster. This was observed around the time of the Black Summer bushfires and throughout the lockdown periods of the pandemic. If you are concerned for your wellbeing or the wellbeing of someone you know, help is available. The Orange Door is the access point for local family violence services and ECLC can provide a range of family violence legal assistance including support with intervention orders. In the case of an immediate safety risk, please call Triple Zero (000) ECLC’s Director of Legal Services, Belinda Lo, said many people don’t realise they have a problem until well after a natural disaster has occurred. “We are working with all of our local councils and other services to support people on the ground. This legal help check is another tool that can save people additional problems down the track. People who identify legal issues can come to us for assistance or referrals.” ECLC is the local lead for Disaster Legal Help Victoria in Yarra Ranges and the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The Disaster Recovery Legal Help Check can be downloaded below. Please call 1300 325 200 or email eclc@eclc.org.au to find out how we can help. This post is Open to comments Everyone has heard of FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA responders respond to National Disasters within the United States and they provide assistance to local, state, and other federal agencies that suffer any loss. A little bit about me, I am Crematory Operator employed by Sterling and Smith Funeral Directors which is owned by Anthem Partners in Frisco TX, in august of 2023 I suffered an injury that has not stopped hurting since it happened, I am out on Worker’s Comp in California, however my understanding that once I get released to return back to work, it is unfortunate, the company will not employ me any longer as I will be considered a liability in the cremation service. With that said, I will have to find a different job that will suit my needs and desires, the Funeral Services Industry is where I want to be in some capacity, the reason I mentioned FEMA at the beginning of this post, was because I would like to start a similar organization to that of FEMA, however this organization would specifically be for the purpose of providing support and assistance to Funeral Homes, from staff of other Funeral Homes nationwide. When a disaster hits anywhere in the United States all Funeral Homes that join the organization would instantly be alerted to the incident and we in the industry would respond to assist any Funeral Home that is affected by the disaster. The way other funeral homes in the organization would help is by implementing a policy of selecting 1-4 staff members that woulf be willing to travel at a moment’s notice to the funeral homes in distress, once the assist from other funeral homes comes to aid a fellow funeral home, the funeral home in distress would offer to place the response teams with accommodations, local transport services and meals as well as payment for services rendered after the operations of the distressed funeral home becomes fully functional again. Below is just a quick logo that I designed to show some type of official logo. The original thought of starting this organization is solely for the purpose of making sure all funeral homes nationwide are not left untakencareof from emergency services agencies within the local, state, or federal agencies. So what are your thoughts and ideas or suggestions to this post, do you think it would be a good idea, is there a specific funeral home company that would be willing to fund the initial approximate cost of $8,000.00 to help start this organization, note the $8,000.00 would be paid to a law firm that specializes in helping organizations get started with all the federal legal documents being filed so that the organization would be accepted in all 50 states of the USA. Also any and all funeral homes that are interested in the organization would have to pay annual membership fee’s in order to pay for a team of staff members to go out and recruit funeral homes to join the cause.
