This September, I will be holding a one-day Body Mapping workshop for community development practitioners. The benefits of body mapping as a participatory and collaborative activity in projects are: - working with participatory arts-focused methods with communities - supporting communities in identifying and sharing their lived experiences - focusing on strength and resilience - great for empowering and disseminating participants' voices Body mapping is a great way to work with marginalised groups typically excluded from community development. We will also spend some time unpacking how to undertake Body Mapping using a trauma informed approach. Join us: When: Saturday 21st September 2024 Time: 10.00 am to 4.00 pm AEDT Where: Melbourne City Cost: $250.00 / $212.50 + BF Accessibility information is here: https://lnkd.in/g6fHKDdJ #GEDSI #participatoryarts #communitydevelopment #internationaldevelopment #socialinclusion https://lnkd.in/gYBrKppw

It's a Sunday at noon, you know what that means. Episode 19 of Accessagogy is up, with an episode on Accessible Group Work. I provide four ways to think about group work design to help support inclusion, but also end with hopeful possibilities for thinking of assessments (and community building) in a more sustainable way. I am looking forward to any ideas or resources you have around this topic. This is just a beginning of a larger conversation that needs to happen. We heard about: - Values in Action: Reflecting on personal values to define a shared purpose and drive growth within the Warm Welcome community. - Transactional vs. Relational Culture: Prioritizing personal connections over goals, viewing individuals as ends in themselves, fostering a patient approach in the Warm Spaces. - 1-2-1 Conversations: Initiating intentional 121 conversations to deepen connections, recognize individuals' potential, and foster a relational culture. - Characteristics of 1-2-1s: Conducting relational meetings as a means to build public relationships, emphasizing deep listening and shared values. - How to Conduct 1-2-1 Conversations: Inviting others to warm spaces for tea or a meal, sharing stories and seeking commonalities to build relational connections. - Effective 1-2-1 Questions: Using open-ended questions exploring personal essence, motivations & aspirations to enhance understanding and connection. Our team increased community engagement by 60% in just 5 months. How’d we do it? Intentionally and responsively: 1) We Listened. Our number one mission was to build a school that centered around the community that we served. You can’t do that without intentionally listening and including your community as key decision makers. Their voice is the most important voice. 2) We built consistent and predictable communication systems. Doing this built trust and credibility. Our community knew when and how we would communicate and even looked forward to it! 3) Why did they look forward to it? Because we had a good hook. We knew that in order for our families to engage, we had to show them what they wanted to see. In this case, it was their kids!! We were very intentional about ALWAYS including pictures of their kids learning and playing in the communication we sent out. 4) Because we knew our community, we knew how they liked to be communicated with. We made it easy, engaging, and approachable. 5) Lastly, we invited them in. In our mind, our school was the best place in the world and only made better by the involvement of our families. We provided many options for our community to engage, and they did! When you bring an energy like that to an organization, who wouldn’t want to be a part of it? What are some of the ways that you have increased engagement in the community you serve? #CommunityEngagement #RelationshipBuilding #InclusiveCommunities #Collaboration #Communication

Beyond providing insight into others' experiences, storytelling has the powerful ability to foster empathy. Hearing someone else's tale—especially when it resonates with aspects of our own life—creates a natural empathetic connection. This emotional bond helps break down barriers often present during difficult conversations regarding family business transitions or disputes over wealth distribution. This empathetic connection allows individuals to feel seen, heard, and understood, fostering healthier dialogue moving forward. The benefits extend beyond immediate circles, promoting wider understanding and harmonious interactions throughout communities associated with high-profile families. Embracing narrative-based approaches can have far-reaching impacts on societal cohesion overall. Experience the transformative power of RISE, a personal development program designed to support individuals on their journey to self-discovery and empowerment. Are you a face to face or online communication person? 🤔 For us, face to face interaction is an essential part of our work. Physically engaging with communities allows us to truly understand their needs before committing to projects. This personal connection saves us against potential miscommunications, fostering a transparent and open dialogue. In our line of work, mutual understanding is the foundation of #efficiency. It helps us to analyse their challenges and address their issues effectively. Furthermore, involving them in the process also builds a sense of ownership, responsibility, and appreciation in the project! Which communication method do you prefer? Creating Spaces where Communities Thrive 🔸 Experience Designer 🔸 Learning Architect 🔸 Community Crafter 🔸 Facilitator 🔸 Speaker
Do you agree? It got me thinking! I was really struck by a text on community emergence by David Spinks 🌟 It made me wonder: where do you see emergence happening in yours communities? Emergence is about how complex patterns arise from simple interactions 🌐 And a community is a group of people who gather meaningfully. As a community crafter, I’m intrigued by the meaning that arises when we come together. This definitely adds to my research on collaboration and group synergy in learning experiences 🌱 This lived research is part of my Experience Design Program. After learning the fundamental concepts of experience design, we are out in the world exploring with our minds, hearts, and bodies about a captivating theme. I took this chance to delve into a long-standing interest that has guided me here. After a day full of facilitation yesterday, I’m pondering if the facilitation in itself also works as containers to allow our collaboration and co-creation heart-led intelligence to emerge? I was thrilled to read about this community feeling as "magical" – it’s still the word that best captures it ✨. Dive into David’s article to explore the 12 attributes of emergent communities with some very intriguing concepts, and share your thoughts! I would love to continue the conversation in the comments.

Have you seen our latest Blog? We love facilitating because it’s a powerful way to support communities as they work towards achieving their goals. In this post, Wendy summarises the role of the community facilitator, describes what good community facilitation looks like and explains what a facilitator should be doing before, during and after a community event. Good community facilitators need a mix of organisational skills (to plan and run activities) and emotional skills (to support participants and promote mutual understanding). They put the community first by learning where community members are coming from and make sure they have some ownership over the session agenda. Find out more in our blog on How to be an effective community facilitator. Read the Blog here: https://lnkd.in/dT42b9Z5
