While our offices were closed for Juneteenth on Wednesday, we had a great time celebrating with a staff potluck earlier in the week. We had so much staff participation, with many foods related to the holiday and its history. We hope everyone had a chance to enjoy celebrating! #Juneteenth

"On the farms, there have been many changes. We have bathrooms, that’s one of the things we really needed. There is more respect on the farm, there are no more abuses. Before, the crewleaders and the fieldwalkers, they would say disgusting things to us and we just had to remain silent. But thanks to the Fair Food Program, we are ending these situations. These changes are now in many farms, but there are many more farms out there yet to be covered." -Reina (Farmworker) Since farmworkers first started organizing in Immokalee in 1993, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers has been fighting for the human rights of farmworkers and low wage workers everywhere. Over the last 30 years, through the CIW’s work, farmworkers have secured major gains— from significant wage increases and forced labor prevention, to enforceable COVID protocols and rigorous heat stress protections. In the process, farmworkers forged a model for guaranteeing human rights for low-wage workers across the globe, and collaborated with workers in multiple industries on five continents to expand that model. Those victories would not have been possible without the support of our incredibly generous network of allies and supporters: the Fair Food Nation. As the CIW’s 30-year anniversary wraps up and the Fair Food Program continues to rapidly expand Fair Food Program donors Travis McConnell, Cheryl Queen, Brent Probinsky, Mary P. Pautz, Heal the Planet Foundation, and an anonymous donor have issued a challenge to Fair Food Nation: If 300 individuals make a gift this week (regardless of the gift size) they would give $30,000 to the Fair Food Program. In 6 days, 270 Fair Food allies have become human rights defenders by giving to the Fair Food Program. We have 1 day left to unlock $30,000 to support the program that has achieved unprecedented transformations in the fields, like those Reina describes above. https://lnkd.in/eCftUfdp

As Mardi Gras approaches, it's a reminder of the vibrant cultures and traditions that enrich our workplaces. This festival teaches us about creativity, diversity, and the power of community. Speaking of the power of community, let me share a Mardi Gras story that goes beyond the beads and bands. Back in 1983, when I was just starting up my oil business in Wichita, Kansas, I found myself in a pinch. I needed to secure a hefty $300,000 deposit to purchase several oil assets from Texaco, and despite my best efforts, I was coming up short. In a last-ditch effort, I placed an ad in the local newspaper seeking investors. The response I got was nothing short of a Mardi Gras miracle. A gentleman called me after seeing the ad, visited my office, and – to my utter disbelief – handed me a check for the full amount later that day. But here's where it gets even more incredible: when I tried to repay him, none of my checks were cashed. His act of kindness was a rare gift that propelled me forward during a challenging time. It was as if, through him, a higher power was affirming the ethos of Mardi Gras – community support and generosity. This experience has stayed with me, reminding me that the spirit of Mardi Gras isn't confined to one day or place. It's in the acts of empathy we extend to one another, in the ways we support our colleagues, and in the culture of giving that we cultivate. In the spirit of Mardi Gras, let's not just celebrate our diversity; let's actively support and uplift each other in our workplaces and beyond. How will you bring the spirit of Mardi Gras into your professional life this year? #Generosity #CommunitySupport #MardiGrasMiracle #DiversityAndInclusion #MardiGras #WorkplaceCulture

🍅 What's growing in your garden? 🥒 It's really cool having green thumbs at the ASCP office who compliment well with staff who like experimenting with food and making new dishes - like me! 👩🌾 When the gardeners of the office bring in their harvest, I'm reminded of a cooking show where something new pops up and you have to try and make a delicious dish with whatever ingredient has been presented. 🫛 Today in the office kitchen we find cherry tomatoes and dark meter beans! 👩🏻🍳 I think I'll try making a stir-fry, others have suggested pickling the beans...what do you think? 🧊 We used this fun little office activity as inspiration for the #justice, #equity, #diversity, and #inclusion (JEDI) Committee Icebreaker today... 💡 Beyond making great ideas and important #jedi work come into action - check out what else is growing in the collective ASCP JEDI member garden! It would be so fun to have you join - feel free to reach out if you're curious about or want to support these efforts to make #agingcare, #pharmacy, and #healthcare more JEDI aligned!

I visited Austin, TX recently and found a great local eatery, OneTaco. Taquería, when I was out for a run. I'd never heard of it before, but I knew immediately that I had found something special. There were a few initial signs: - the line was LONG but moved FAST, - the line was full of VARIOUS kinds of buyers (construction workers, office workers, tourists, etc), and - buyers were willing to STAND and eat in order to make sure they got their meal. Clearly OneTaco. Taquería had something figured out about their constituency, and when I looked closer I confirmed what I initially suspected, they were a successful Austin food truck that had expanded their footprint locally to multiple brick-and-mortars over the course of the last number of years. "Expand-local" is a model that lies close to the heart of some of the questions Elle Ramel and I are trying to understand at One More Store: - What helps LOCAL stores expand intelligently and effectively in-place? - How can ANY store leverage their LOCAL IDENTITY inside their business? - Where do owners/operators go to BUILD on this kind of momentum? We've been asking ourselves these questions for a little while now. What do you think?
