I took a day out to present my career over the years to an absolute fab bunch of students.
Throughout each session I showcased my career spanning 20 years! (I know I still look so young 😜) and then for a bit of fun, I asked them to split into groups, where I then set them a few tasks.
1) consider the top 5 challenges for companies today.
Then
2) consider the top 5 challenges for companies with their employees.
Each and everyone of them engaged. I was blown away by the answers. The next generation of our industry, right there in one room. 🥰
I then ended each session with an overview of YuLife showcasing how gamification is helping to support employees by rewarding those taking proactive steps to support their physical and mental health. I tried to tempt them into my yuduko, but as you know that’s cheating 😜
I felt so rewarded, by giving up a day of my time to volunteer 🥰 Will I do it again? Absolutely 💯 should you invest your time in the next generation 💯
Leap into action and make your extra day count!
We often find ourselves asking for more time to achieve our goals, develop skills, and explore new horizons … and courtesy of the leap year we’ve been gained an extra day.
So why not use this calendar gift to make a difference in young lives?
Volunteer with Working Options in Education and help young people transform their career and life outcomes. Sign up for as many or as few sessions as you would like (just one is okay!)
Students tell us how impactful it is when they get to hear authentic stories, and so we don’t script sessions; your story is yours and we encourage you to use it to inspire young people as they start out on their own career pathways.
How can you make a difference?
– Visit a school and share your career journey.
– Team up with colleagues and hold a Business Challenge session and boost morale. Or, host a Taster Day and let young people experience your industry first-hand.
– Help your industry, by nurturing young talent and shaping the future of your field.
Remember, you’ve gained an entire day this year – a gift that can change lives.

Let's not overcomplicate this.
Too often smaller or growing organizations feel ill-equipped to provide growth opportunities because of their size, lack of in-house L&D or budgets. Instead, I'd suggest:
✅ Find out how people want to grow
✅ Connect them with stretch opportunities
✅ Create spaces for peer-led learning
✅ Identify external trainings or resources that align
✅ Allocate professional development stipends
And rinse and repeat.
Bonus: For schools that are getting closer to the end of the year, having these conversations with teammates now can support retention efforts, especially before folks leave for the summer.

🧠 HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE SOCIAL MOBILITY AT YOUR ORGANISATION
I didn’t know anyone working in professional services growing up.
My first real exposure to it was at a Bank of America insight day, where someone who looked a bit like me and talked a bit like me told me about this charity called upReach that had helped him get there.
So I signed up, and they taught me what all the different things in the investment industry were, how they fit together and how I might one day be a part of it.
At the end of the first year at upReach they organised a spring week at LCP, which was my very first experience of investment consulting.
I really enjoyed this and fed that back to upReach, who set me up with a mentor at Redington the year after. This then led to a placement year, and to the role I’m doing now.
But none of this would have happened without that Bank of America insight day, LCP spring week or Redington placement year.
Cool story sure, but so what?
Well you can help make this happen for more people across the country by giving them a window into your world.
Start by offering low commitment insight days and then more committal spring week and internships that help people staircase up to a full time job.
You get to see a more diverse talent pool - no one said diversification only applied to investments - and help improve social mobility.
If you want to hear this story in more detail (and others!!), you can find a recording of the Diversity Project - Investment Industry panel I was on last week below.
I come on around the 20 minute mark, but do watch it all if you can - the stories are incredible!

There’s no such thing as a “cut and paste” approach to learning. Sidny, a junior at Inspire, the Idaho Connections Academy, knew that she needed her education to fit around her life, not the other way around.
Connections Academy's individualized approach offers flexible, personalized schedules, which means more time to support her family and their business while prioritizing electives to help her reach career goals and prepare her for life beyond.

🤔For many young people, choosing a career or pathway after school is based on limited knowledge. They see what their parents do, or family friends and what's highlighted in the media BUT the landscape of careers is vast & continually changing!
👨🏼🏫So hearing from different people with different careers helps broaden & inspire students future career plans - and that's why we encourage businesses like you to become a volunteer.
