Aspen Power's Kristy Zaragoza will be on GridTECH Connect Forum's upcoming panel: "Community solar: A California dream?" Expect an interesting discussion on the heels of the recent California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) decision to adopt a flawed community solar program. If you have questions or would like to connect in advance let us know! By siding with utilities, the CPUC has made a choice that not only undermines the interests of ratepayers but also poses a significant setback to California's ambitious climate goals. Distributed energy generation supports the equitable and sustainable growth of community solar initiatives, and our progress toward a cleaner and more resilient energy future. At LAGI we've been studying the land use requirements of the energy transition from our first information graphic in 2009 that showed how much surface area would be required to power all the world's energy needs with solar power. We certainly have the space. At the same time, we also don't want to create conflicts with other important land uses. The good news is that we don't have to. We can instead be creative and thoughtful about where we install solar power. And we can focus on bringing solar(+storage) into our cities, closer to where power is consumed. Utility solar is great, but it requires costly long-distance transmission line upgrades, suffers from transmission line losses, and is more susceptible to single point failures that can lead to blackouts. It also sometimes requires cutting down trees or making hard decisions about conservation and environmental stewardship. Jessica Nix's article in Bloomberg highlights five ways we can strategically place our solar power infrastructure, including the kinds of artful integrations that can make our cities more beautiful as we make them more sustainable!

After analyzing dozens of community solar projects and spotlighting four specific case studies, our Equitable Community Solar Primer highlights why no one-size-fits-all approach to community solar exists. Equitable projects can be challenging to replicate and scale, with each initiative having a unique range of needs, circumstances, collaborators, and barriers. However, the potential for transformative community benefits and renewable energy access remains immense. Our ECS Primer delves into the various challenges and potential solutions to help guide developing inclusive and effective community solar models. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eSKUcHJg
