“Ozempic breath” is the latest side effect associated with taking certain GLP-1 medications that’s gaining media attention. I recently spoke with Healthline Media about the potential causes of this unpleasant side effect, along with strategies for combating it. A growing number of people are reporting they’re experiencing “Ozempic breath,” or foul-smelling breath they believe stems from taking GLP-1 weight loss drugs. “This is a direct result of the mechanism of action of GLP-1 medications. All drugs within this medication class lead to a delay in gastric emptying, which means it takes significantly longer for food to exit the stomach. This is one way in which the medications assist with portion control.” The downside is that food can break down and ferment in the stomach. “The stomach is normally designed to empty within four hours after eating. However, GLP-1 medications like Ozempic cause food to remain in the stomach for many more hours, even days. SEMAGLTUIDE class: glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists Category: Antidiabetic medication Mechanism Of Action: Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist. The drug decreases blood sugar levels. The decrease is theorized to be caused by the mimicking of the incretin glucagon-like peptide-1. It also appears to enhance growth of pancreatic beta cells, which are responsible for insulin production and release. Additionally, it inhibits the production of glucagon, the hormone that increases glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. It reduces food intake by lowering appetite and slowing down digestion in the stomach, helping reduce body fat. Adverse Drug Reactions : nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, fatigue, indigestion/heartburn, dizziness, abdominal distension, belching, hypoglycemia in people with type 2 diabetes, flatulence, gastroenteritis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It can also cause pancreatitis, gastroparesis, and bowel obstruction. Levothyroxine is the first-line medication for hypothyroidism; this medication can be used for mild to severe hypothyroidism (Nurse’s Drug Handbook, 2020). Levothyroxine replaces endogenous thyroid hormones to help control DNA transcription and protein synthesis (Nurse’s Drug Handbook, 2020). This medication should be taken early in the morning, at least 30- 1 hours before breakfast. Some of the most common adverse effects are angina pectoris, congestive heart failure, flushing, anxiety, cramps, heat intolerance, hair loss, and rash (Nurse's Drug Handbook, 2020). Patients who suffer from hypothyroidism could try some non-pharmacologic treatments to help improve symptoms. Some of the changes should be a simple diet change.
