CoMoUK has published a new policy briefing which urges the Scottish Government to work with UK ministers to introduce shared e-scooters to cities and towns, helping the nation meet its climate change targets. Scots have so far missed out on the benefits of e-scooters. The briefing reports on the impacts of the trials which have been running in England since 2020 as well as collating research and case studies from overseas. It also outlines eight key recommendations for authorities to consider for successful deployment of shared e-scooters. They cover everything from ensuring viability to managing parking and widening participation. Read the report here https://lnkd.in/ed-D7Tbv

The Maine Turnpike Authority released information this week on the proposed Gorham Connector, a new 5-mile highway toll road connecting Gorham to Portland. The Bicycle Coalition of Maine does not support the project because we do not believe it will relieve traffic congestion in the long-run, it will increase vehicle miles traveled, and it goes against Maine’s climate action goals. A project of this size and cost must carefully consider the impact it will have to the greater Portland community over the decades to come. In the coming months the MTA will be hosting forums and soliciting public feedback. Follow us on social media and sign-up for our emails on our website to be kept informed as these meetings come up. [I'd like to end with a question to drive/guide discussion--some ideas] How would you spend $200+million? Should we build more roads? Invest in public transit and active transportation? What is the best solution to reduce traffic, while improving safety and lowering pollution?

As transit agencies work towards equitable mobility and greener transportation, the concept of fare free becomes more popular. But, is free transit actually more equitable? Bloomberg recently discussed the topic, arguing instead that the best way to achieve equity in ridership and cleaner transportation is more frequent and reliable service. David Bragdon, Executive Director of the Transit Center nonprofit advocacy group, shared, "If you take bad American transit that costs $1.50 and make that bad service free, that won’t move the needle enough to make a climate impact. Converting general traffic lanes for bus rapid transit and generally expanding transit service to make it more readily available is the key to getting people out of automobiles is providing abundant, frequent service around the clock." 🙌🙌🙌 With the once-in-a-generation flood of beefy transportation funds coming from the BIL, they must be used for climate-positive investments: active and public transit and VMT reduction. Blue states like NY should be leading the way to show that full transportation decarbonization is within reach.
📣 “State departments of transportation are kind of the next frontier for climate advocacy to conquer,” says Justin Backal Balik of Evergreen Action . “There’s a lot of blue states where the transportation decisions are still divorced from the climate conversation.” 🍃 To tackle the climate crisis, transportation agencies must be the climate champions at the state level. 📝"Climate and clean transportation advocates around the country sent letters to the governors of 22 states urging them to set targets consistent with reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. The letters ask officials to consider what’s achievable both through vehicle electrification and by reducing highway expansion." Great to partner with these amazing organizations, including Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), America Walks, Transportation For America, Shared-Use Mobility Center, and more!

Private jets are up to 14 times more polluting than commercial planes per passenger, and 50 times more polluting than trains. Yet every year 90,000 private jets take off in the UK. We're in the middle of a climate emergency. The next UK Government needs to start acting like it. That's why we're proposing a £1000 per head tax on private jet users to deter these climate wrecking flights and tackle their huge environmental impact. 🔎 https://lnkd.in/eWXCNFFh
