The Department for Transport recently released the 2023 National Travel Survey for England. The survey reveals an increase in the use of private cars and motorcycles, as well as most public transport modes — except for London buses, where usage has remained steady compared to 2022. In contrast, the use of active travel modes such as walking and cycling has stagnated over the same period. There is an urgent need to cut emissions and reduce reliance on private cars by expanding shared transport options. Research by CoMoUK finds that bike sharing schemes encourage people to start cycling again, with 48% of users reporting that they were riding for the first time in over a year or ever. Users of these schemes also report enhanced physical and mental health, saving money and reducing car miles. The latest bike share research report, also found a record number of daily rides on shared bikes in the UK last year. Additionally, 69 per cent of users said they were cycling ‘more often’ or ‘much more often’ since joining, with this figure rising to 72 per cent among e-bike users. "Most new #ebike users continued to regularly use their #bikes as a substitute for car travel, even a year after purchase. Low-income households reduced their car trips and decreased carbon #emissions the most." This new research answers key questions about e-bike incentives --> "Are new cycling habits sustainable? Who benefits most from these incentives? And are they worth the cost?" OneEarth Living supported this research led by Alexander Bigazzi at the Research on Active Transportation (REACT) Lab (University of British Columbia). REACT surveyed participants in an e-bike incentive program offered by our valued partner, the District of Saanich, B.C. --> "93 per cent of users [were] new to e-bikes, and 60 per cent new to cycling altogether." Glenys Verhulst, Sustainability Specialist, Sustainability and Strategic Initiatives Division, at the District of Saanich shared with Cora Hallsworth and Dagmar Timmer that: “The District of Saanich is so pleased with these results because transportation is the biggest source of emissions in our community. We’re happy to help people improve their affordability and their fun as they reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.” Read more here and note that a webinar recording and selected slides are available: https://lnkd.in/gP2iivbu

Berlin is a haven for integrated active transport options, with a well-developed network of bike lanes and paths that make commuting by bicycle both convenient and safe. Bicycles can effectively solve the “first/last mile” problem, which refers to the challenge of getting commuters from their homes to the nearest transit station and from the station to their final destination. Berlin boasts an extensive network of 620 kilometers of bike paths, including 150 kilometers of mandatory bicycle paths, 190 kilometers of off-road bicycle routes, and 60 kilometers of bike lanes on the roads. Protected Bike Lanes: To enhance safety, Berlin has been investing in protected bike lanes that separate cyclists from automobile traffic. These lanes are marked with green paint for better visibility. It helps tourists like me too. Cycle Superhighways: The city is planning to build around 100 kilometers of cycle superhighways to connect the suburbs to the city center, making it easier for long-distance commuters to travel by bike. Bike Parking: Safe and secure bike parking is a priority, with around 15,000 new bike stands installed since 2017 and more planned for the future. Cargo Bikes: Berlin offers rental of cargo bikes through the ‘fLotte kommunal’ program, providing a climate-friendly alternative to cars for transporting goods. Lime Bikes and Scooters: Lime offers both e-bikes, like the one i am riding, and e-scooters for rent in Berlin, providing a flexible and eco-friendly option for short-distance travel. Since their introduction in 2019, Lime has facilitated over 5 million trips in Berlin. Cycling in Berlin is not just a mode of transport; it’s a way of life. With continuous investments in cycling infrastructure, the city is making strides towards becoming even more bike-friendly, promoting sustainability and healthy living. if you would like to see how human centred design can lead to a dedicated bike area in Intercity trains, come visit me at InnoTrans. #InnoTrans2024 #Berlin #HumanFactors Louise Howard GAICD eMBA

We are often asked, if bike sharing can also work beyond large cities and metropolitan regions. The answer is a definite yes! Bike sharing also brings many advantages to the transportation network of smaller cities, as well as suburban and rural areas! Here are a few examples: ➡ nextbike Niederösterreich, our bike share offer for Lower Austria - powered by Radland Niederösterreich - not only provides a large-scale sustainable mobility option for roughly 60 municipalities across the region, it also surpasses its personal best on a regular basis. Already this year, rentals for the first two months almost tripled! ➡ E-bikes turn hilly terrains and longer distances into a breeze. By providing e-bikes for rural areas and more challenging terrains, we turn cycling not only into an elemental means of transport, we also make it accessible to a broader audience. Here are a few examples: BBK Klimabizi a small bike share scheme for the Urdaibai Region in Spain, EinfachMobil a supra-regional multi-modal scheme for the Ortenau region and many more. ➡ Last but not least we would like to share a very special initiative: Thanks to a special commuters’ tariff, users of the schemes Bergisches E-Bikes, RVK E-Bike, Eifel E-Bike and RSVG_Bike e-bikes, only pay a discounted price when they rent one of our bikes during the night. Thus, they can easily use a nextbike when they cycle home after work and rely on the same bike to get back to work the next day. What other initiatives do you know of that make bike sharing in rural areas more attractive? #BikeSharing #SustainableMobility #BikeSharevolution #PublicTransport

Director of Behaviour Change & Development at Cycling UK | Behavioural Scientist | Urban Mobility Expert | Strategic Visionary
In the build-up to the #GeneralElection, I’m looking at our 6 asks of the next government within our Cycling UK Freedom to Move manifesto. 🌟 Number 2 is asking for the provision of better transport choices to reduce traffic. 🚗 Some people will have to or still want to drive, but the government must do more to make it easy and enjoyable for the majority to get around by walking, wheeling, or cycling. 💡 Presenting and enabling choice is important to shaping travel behaviour. In summary, here’s why: 🧠 Our choices are often driven by our attitudes, and attitudes can and do play an integral role in shaping transport choice. 1️⃣ Perceptions of Convenience and Comfort: People tend to favour transport modes that they perceive as more convenient and comfortable, and their attitudes and behavioural intent are shaped by this. For example, if someone believes that driving a car is more convenient than walking, cycling, or taking public transport, they are more likely to choose driving. 2️⃣ Safety Concerns: If someone perceives cycling as unsafe, they are less likely to choose it. For example, concerns about traffic accidents or lack of dedicated bike lanes can deter individuals from cycling, leading them to opt for other modes of transport. 🎯 Targeted policies and infrastructure developments can significantly influence our attitudes and, in turn, our choices. 📚 There are some interesting studies into transport choice; this one highlights the causes and subsequent results of enacting transport choice: https://lnkd.in/e-cUQhd8 The study states: Higher population density, mixed land uses, and proximity to public transport in Germany are associated with lower car use. This underscores the importance of urban planning and infrastructure in influencing transport choices, with more sustainable planning leading to increased use of public transport, walking, and cycling. (FYI, Germany is one of the highest countries in terms of cars per capita, oh, and yet 54% of Germans ride a bike!) Accessibility to transport and destinations also plays a key role in transport choice. Accessibility needs to be built into all transport options from the stage of inception. Even perceived accessibility plays a role in shaping our transport choice and attitudes, as this study shows: https://lnkd.in/eqPivVBF Perceived accessibility was found to be strongly associated with transport choice. Results from the study suggest that perceived accessibility should be taken into account when stimulating a shift from car use to cycling or walking. 🚴♂️ Planning, enabling, and advocating for transport choice allows a better option for the environment, is better for our health, provides access to employment, combats exclusion and transport disadvantage, and enables mobility. #SustainableTransport #UrbanPlanning #TransportChoices #Cycling #Walking #PublicTransport #InclusiveMobility

A total of 65% of people surveyed by active travel charity Sustrans want better links with public transport, like secure cycle parking at railway stations. The Walking and Cycling Index (formerly Bike Life) is the biggest assessment of walking, wheeling and cycling in urban areas in the UK and Ireland. It is delivered by Sustrans in collaboration with 23 cities and urban areas. Each city reports on the progress made towards making walking, wheeling and cycling more attractive, everyday ways to travel. The latest report, published this year (2024), found that walking is the most common form of travel among the 21,374 people taking part in the survey. It also found 24% of residents want to drive less, yet 36% of residents often use a car because no other transport options are available. Meanwhile 60% agree, while 18% disagree, that increasing space for people socialising, walking, wheeling and cycling on their local high street would improve their local area. And 56% support, while 17% oppose, shifting investment from road building schemes to fund walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport. The data is used to explore the impact walking, wheeling and cycling is making and to support the delivery of schemes and programmes that give more people the choice to take part in active travel. As a leading provider of cycle parking solutions to schools, workplaces, healthcare settings, visitor attractions and in the public realm, we understand why better cycle parking provision is needed at public transport interchanges. We have a proven track record of providing cycle parking infrastructure at locations such as Euston Station, Dundee Railway Station and across the wider Transport for Greater Manchester network. Take a look at our case studies or contact our team on 01782 54411 to discover more about the cycle parking products we design, manufacture and install.
