GreenSquareAccord has announced receiving 254 nominations for their Gold Star Awards, describing this as an impressive 42% increase over last year’s entries. However, this claim seems somewhat underwhelming, especially considering their workforce size and the upcoming expenditure for the awards ceremony. To put this in perspective, with an employee base ranging between 1,000 and 5,000, the 254 nominations represent only about 5.08% to 25.4% of their total staff. Last year’s nominations, calculated to be around 179, indicate a low participation rate. Moreover, it is important to note that these nominations are solely from staff members, with no input from customers or residents. This exclusion is disheartening, particularly considering the crucial role that customers and residents play in the organisation’s operations. Their feedback and recognition would provide a more comprehensive and authentic measure of performance and service quality. When considering the costs associated with organising and hosting an awards ceremony, including logistics, venue, awards, and lost productivity, one must question the efficiency and impact of this exercise. The expenditure seems extravagant and not necessarily reflective of broad recognition across the organisation. Given these figures and the lack of customer/resident involvement, it's crucial to consider whether the awards genuinely enhance morale and recognition or if they simply serve as a costly tradition with limited reach. In light of these numbers, the resources allocated to the Gold Star Awards might be better invested in more impactful employee and customer engagement initiatives, or better yet spent making the homes of their residents safe, warm and dry.

Say Hello to Lenin Vincent 💛 Our New Team Lead! 🥷 If you meet Vincent, you might find him a bit reserved—but there’s so much more beneath the surface. In just one year at Folks, Vincent has shown an incredible eye for detail, quiet determination, and a kind, thoughtful way of working with others. Vincent moved to Denmark less than two years ago. He’s still finishing his Master’s, doesn’t have a driver’s license yet, only knows two Danish words, and yes, we could point out plenty of flaws if we wanted to. But none of that defines him in our eyes. What matters most is his caring nature and how deeply he lives out our values. He knows what it’s like to be out in the field, how to connect with the team, and, most importantly, how not to treat Folks working out there. That’s why this promotion felt like the right step 💙🌻 Yes, stepping into a leadership role will come with challenges. Managing clients, partners, team members, admin work, and balancing everything will take time. Mistakes will happen - that’s part of the process. But we trust Vincent to grow, adapt, and bounce back stronger every time. AND ANOTHER AWARD GOES TO… Opening up my LinkedIn feed this morning and I was greeted with more of what seems like endless self-acclaim for winning some industry award of which there are now apparently thousands. Okay – I get it. LinkedIn is now a platform for narcissism, self-aggrandizement, back slapping and just general “Look at me how great I and my team are” posts. But the whole award thing has gotten out of hand. Because business has fallen into the trap of feeling compelled to compete and give folks the chance for industry awards, the whole industry awards business has become expert at tapping this vein – creating award after award, and an endless tier of prizes within each award category to feed a greedy industry that serves no true benefit. Ahh, but “awards make us feel good” you’d argue. They say who we are in the vast competitive pecking order. Well, I’d argue – “Uh don’t we all work for the collective goal of driving business – ours or the clients?” “Isn’t the actual reward just seeking SATISFACTION – creatively, emotionally and intellectually – ACHIEVED WITH A JOB DONE TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILITIES?” “And then when done often enough – and measurably enough – that we see the financial rewards through promotions, raises, bonuses (clients renewing contracts?) et al?” There’s a term called “scarcity value” that applies here. Think of awards like pies. The first one you dig into is great. But the more and more you have of them, the less and less you derive joy from each, therefore diminishing the value (but likely increasing your stomach ache!). Personally, I’d rather receive or dole out the occasional and sincerely offered “Great job [NAME HERE]” than almost anything else. But then I grew up with one boss especially stingy with compliments – but each rare pronouncement making me feel like I could walk on water. So how about it people? Less sharing of awards on this platform (if you want to keep paying for the privilege of displaying more shiny statues go ahead), more meaningfully recognizing rare and true achievement. Last night, I was recognised for Creativity and Innovation, Partnership and to my team’s absolute delight - the Office Sunshine. 👀 But don't worry, I feel very grounded - they made sure of it! 😂 The truth is, these awards are not just about me. Together, we’ve faced obstacles, lifted each other up when things got tough, and never shied away from doing what’s right. These moments of recognition remind me of how far we’ve come.
