💡 2 crucial lessons writing football match previews for the first time taught me: Before I dive in, here is a little backstory After attending Freelance Fest by Tyler Hakes last year, I knew my iGaming writing portfolio was due for a revamp. At the time, I was writing #sportsbetting guest posts and #casino articles, which were insufficient to make my portfolio stand out. So, I headed out on my own to add new pieces, such as in-depth slot descriptions, #realmoney and #sweepstakescasinos reviews, esports betting guides, etc., to my portfolio. While planning the update, I came across a football match preview article on someone’s profile. And I thought this would look good on my portfolio. 😃 Last December, I eventually wrote a forecast for the Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid match, which was quite good. In the future, I plan to cover top-flight EPL match previews and a full game-week report. This brings us to the lessons I learned from this experience. 👉Familiarity is important: Despite being my first attempt, the final output turned out to be scroll-worthy with near-perfect prediction. What helped most was my familiarity with football and betting. The article would have been a mere regurgitation of top-ranking results and fall flat if I were writing about some sports I didn’t know about. But I have been watching professional football for over 15 years. So, I’m accustomed to the major teams, players, leagues and tournament structures. This made it easy to fill out the major sections and rely on my own judgment to predict match outcomes. 👉A strong research skill is the key to any great writing: Even though I was familiar with football, I still needed to research most of the information - from the content outline to the key facts and stats - to ensure the content was precise. So what does this tell you? While familiarity can ease your burden, strong research skill is the backbone of great writing. It will help you know what needs to go into your content, how to piece info together to make a cohesive whole, where to look for each piece of info and what makes great content on the topic you’re covering. So, I’m saying here that even if you don’t have much experience in a niche or topic, you can research it and create compelling content on it. Over to you. 💰From federation to #media investor: also #volleyball leads the way in global sports! Volleyball is also one of the sports driving global growth in marketing and media rights. Of course, football is alone at the top, but sports such as basketball, volleyball, rugby, cricket and others are also part of a dynamic ecosystem whose value continues to grow every day. This is mainly due to the digital media developments of the past 10 years. In addition to broadcast, numerous fan channels have been added that connect you 24 hours a day. At any time, a fan can interact with their favorite league, player, club or event. And the maximum potential seems far from being reached. And with the increased possibilities of AI and gamified content, the ‘fun for the fan’ only increases. Many rights holders such as the FIVB and CEV (respectively the World & European Volleyball Federation) have developed new formats in recent years that attracts the public in terms of branding, playing locations & media reach. For example, in volleyball we have the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) for a number of years. A competition of the 16 strongest countries that is played annually all over the world. Nowadays also in countries that do not participate themselves. This also creates a new flow of money: countries or cities are willing to invest seriously to bring sporting events to their region. There are various political or promotional reasons behind this. A logical consequence of the above developments is that production and distribution of the sport assets are taken completely into ownership by the rights holders and their partners. For example, the FIVB, together with CVC Capital, has established Volleyball World, a joint venture which unites all conceivable competencies. In this way, international federations develop into multimedia companies. Another example is the CEV which has given all its events a more recognizable format over the past eight years, as visible in the Champions League Super Finals last weekend in Turkey. An approach in which the men's and women's finals are played at the same location. The format of the European Championships has also been adjusted by starting the tournament in multiple countries as UEFA and FIFA do in football. It simply means more reach, more impact and therefore more revenue. Ownership of streaming services and investments in an attractive startup ecosystem are no longer an exception in international sports. The name of the game of all these strategies is clear: where there are ‘eyeballs' (converted into relevant data) the value of the media and marketing product increases. Frequency and recognisability are the key factors here. In this way we evolve from a 4-yearly World Cup, continental Championship or Olympic Games cycle to annually recurring media spectacles at the highest sporting level. From volleyball to athletics and from football to rugby. The hunger for more sports-entertainment is for sure transforming the world of sports.

Overcome the distances and create a completely new one. Starting with a LinkedIn post, it took us 4 months to implement and publish the final content on social media. A simple video about reading names in national languages (Kazakh and Norwegian) on the eve of the first full-time match in the history of the national teams of Kazakhstan and Norway. Was there such a video format before? Yes. Have there been references to the opposing team in the social networks of clubs/national teams before? Yes. But to shoot and publish a joint video of the two federations outside the final stage of the UEFA or FIFA tournament is something that has not been done before. I believe that this can serve as an excellent start to a new interaction and a new round of relations between international football teams. With this video, I wanted to show that we can unite. Many thanks for the trust, time and help of Norges Fotballforbund (in particular Anne-Lise Johnsen Robb, Morten Morisbak Skjønsberg, Terje Skeie), KFF and our team. I believe that we will be able to take new steps towards popularizing this event and setting a new trend! It is worth noting that despite my work in a betting company, the content was shot without commercial brand integration.
