The new Medicare Reference Pricing analysis released by CIVHC shows overall positive trends in lower commercial payments to hospitals. A HOSPITAL IS TWO PLACES Any one who's worked with me has heard me say the following: "A hospital is two places, 1. A place where sick people go to get well -AND- 2. A place where well people go to get surgery -AND- the second one pays for the first one" Lately I've had to second guess this truism as more and more elective surgery leaves the hospital. Well the article below from Becker's outlines the logical next step for hospitals, build and/or buy ambulatory surgicenters (ASC). Of course the challenge will be to manage them in such a way as to be competitive. Historically hospitals have struggled to manage care in a venue not "in their wheel house" in such a way to be competitive, as opposed to staffing like a hospital unit. But, successful or not, we shouldn't be surprised when hospitals follow Sutton's Law. https://lnkd.in/gwDaan54

Hospitals charge over 50% more for colonoscopy than ASCs A price comparison study published in JAMA Health Forum found that US hospitals often charged higher facility fees for colonoscopy procedures for privately insured patients, compared with ambulatory surgery centers. An analysis of facility fees at about 3,600 US hospitals and 17,000 ASCs showed the fees for colonoscopy, colonoscopy plus biopsy and colonoscopy with polyps removal were about 54%, 56% and 61% higher, respectively, in hospitals than in ASCs. This measure aims to enhance patient care by focusing on their understanding of crucial recovery information post-procedure. 🗓️ Key Dates: Voluntary Reporting: Begins in the CY 2025 reporting period.
