Today marks 36 years since the worst disaster the offshore industry has ever seen. Today we remember the 167 men who lost their lives, a tragedy which profoundly reshaped this industry and set the Cullen Report in motion. This led to comprehensive safety reforms in the offshore oil and gas industry, the introduction of new, stricter standards and the establishment of both the Health & Safety Executive Offshore Division and CompEx Certification. Since launching in 1994, CompEx remains dedicated to protecting people and assets in industries where explosion risk exists, and ensuring workforce safety is underpinned by the highest levels of competency, skills and knowledge. While the energy industry continues to transition and evolve, and adapt to a workforce in transition, the lessons from the Piper Alpha tragedy remain crucial and must not be forgotten, even as we navigate continually changing market dynamics. On this anniversary, we commemorate the lives lost and reaffirm our commitment to those lessons learnt. #PiperAlpha #CompEx

Every year, as many others on this day, I commit 22 minutes to watch the 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗿 film and cast a solemn eye back at the Piper Alpha tragedy: 167 souls is a weight we carry, a constant push to ensure such a catastrophe never befalls our industry again. Yet, from the ashes of that loss, the oil and gas industry has found a fierce resolve to embark on a relentless pursuit of excellence in human performance and process safety. We've implemented stricter regulations and procedures, invested in advanced technology and controls, and not last, fostered a far deeper respect for the power of the forces we harness. Today, let's honor the memory of those lost on 𝗣𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗹𝗽𝗵𝗮 by watching this film, and encourage others to watch, and committing to keep pushing the boundaries of safety for those colleagues and friends who work tirelessly in the frontline to keep our world moving. #SafetyFirst #HumanPerformance #OilandGasHSE #ProcessSafety #OilandGas #TakingEnergyForward #Energy #PiperAlpha #RememberingPiper #StepChangeInSafety

The subsea photos in this article can’t have come from anywhere other than staff leaking them to the press. I suspect that who ever shared these pictures is breaching his/her contract. The social license of companies like Woodside Energy is rapidly eroding - but when even staff and contractors getting paid by these companies are leaking this type of embarrassing information, you know it’s bad. If these companies don’t change their strategy, I fully expect to see more and more of this sort of thing.

Remembering Piper Alpha: A Tragic Legacy and Lessons Learned On July 6, 1988, the North Sea witnessed one of the worst offshore oil disasters in history—the Piper Alpha explosion. This catastrophic event claimed 167 lives and profoundly changed the oil and gas industry's approach to safety. Piper Alpha was originally an oil production platform, later modified for gas production. A series of safety failures and human errors led to a gas leak, igniting a massive explosion and subsequent fires. The tragedy underscored the critical importance of rigorous safety protocols and emergency preparedness. Key Lessons from Piper Alpha: 1. Safety Culture: Prioritize a safety-first mindset at all organizational levels. 2. Emergency Response: Implement robust emergency response plans and ensure regular training. 3. Maintenance Protocols: Enforce stringent maintenance and inspection routines to prevent equipment failures. 4. Regulatory Oversight: Strengthen regulatory frameworks and ensure compliance with safety standards. The legacy of Piper Alpha continues to remind us that safety in the energy sector is non-negotiable. Let’s honor the memory of those who lost their lives by committing to a safer future. #PiperAlpha #OilAndGas #SafetyFirst #HSE

What would you do if you could solve >50% of your pipework maintenance issues before they even begin? You would save time, expose operators to less risk, prevent environmental damage, keep your assets up and running, safeguard yourself from regulatory penalties… And it could save you millions every year. Detecting CUI with Pi as part of a routine inspection campaign can be an ordinary part of your SOP – but the results for safety, the environment and cost-saving are extraordinary.
