🔆 SPOTLIGHT SATURDAY 🔆 This week we are highlighting Hyacinth Devonish! Take a moment to read about Hyacinth journey at Complete Care at Westfield and what keeps her #CompletelyIn for 38 years at our facility! Hyacinth started in 1986. “I remember I was in orientation when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded.” It was a memory that stays with me and a reminder of the number of years working with the company also. I started as a staff nurse, initially schooled in England bringing many skills to my career. I love nursing as I enjoy caring for people and my motto is , “prevention is better than care”. My goal is for us all to be well and healthy and you also have to think how you would want someone to care for you should you ever become incapacitated where you can’t care for yourself. I have 3 children, 1 girl and twin boys and 2 granddaughters. I took this job as it was suitable and convenient to raise my children. My husband worked in the morning, and I worked 3—11 shifts for many years before changing my shift to 7-3 as my children grew older. I love my job, and it is rewarding when you are constantly told by your residents, “oh you were not here, and I missed you, you are the best”. My name is constantly called upon to help no matter the request. My number of years with the company has been an experience. We no longer have workers staying with their companies for extended periods and I often remind my children of being loyal and reliable in whatever the endeavor. If I can help somebody along the way, then my living shall no be in vain. Many past coworkers often ask, am I still working the same place. Yes! I must be about 5 years old in this picture. I am clearly feeling very serious and important in my new nurses uniform in front of my wendy house! As it turned out, it wasn't too many more years later that I got my first job in a care environment. At age 14 I worked as a kitchen assistant in a nursing home. Which, to a 14 year old me was equal parts: 👉Fascinating - seeing the many facets of old age and how to care for people. 👉Terrifying - being throttled by a confused resident. 👉Sobering - collecting a gentlemans water jug from his room to find that he had sadly died. I'll never forget the kindly care assistant who guided me out of the room and tried to give me a cigarette to make me feel better! Truth be told, I spent a few years not knowing what I wanted to do with my life (as most people do), but always seemed to end up back in some sort of care related role. I finally qualified as a nurse at age 23, and I havent looked back since. I still get huge job satisfaction from improving quality of life for my clients. There is great reward in helping people through some of the most difficult times of life. In fact, there's nothing quite like it. If you need help or advice about getting the care you need for an older person or someone with a life limiting illness, head over to our website. Book Review: The In-Between by #nurse, Hadley Vlahos The evolution of societal perspectives on spirituality and the afterlife has indeed been significant. Historically, those who claimed to see spirits or communicate with the deceased were often marginalized or institutionalized. However, contemporary views have shifted towards a broader acceptance of spiritual experiences as part of the human condition. This change reflects a deeper understanding of death as a natural and integral aspect of life, rather than a taboo subject. Hospice nurse, Hadley Vlahos, shares her journey into the realm many in our culture would much rather avoid-- dying. Just as nurses are granted the honorable opportunity to be present to people entering this world, hospice nurses are invited to bear witness and support humans in our transition out of this earthly journey. And, just like life, no two journeys are the same. Continue Reading: https://lnkd.in/enfHnPjS #deathanddying #hospice #palliativecare #healthcare #nursing #holistichealth #books #memoir

At Teesside University we've found that the technology provided by Gener8-Healthcare has significantly enhanced our ability to personalise the learning experience for our students. While the tools are powerful on their own, it's how we adapt them to meet the specific needs of our students that makes a real difference. By leveraging this technology, we've been able to create dynamic, student-centred learning environments that foster engagement and cater to a wide range of learning styles. It’s been exciting to see how adaptable and flexible the technology is, allowing us to continuously innovate in our teaching approach. This collaboration is a great example of how the right tools, combined with thoughtful application, can truly transform education. It has always been our goal to provide technology which allows personalisation. But we don't plan every single use for it. We provide the technology, but it's our customers who make it amazing. Here is just one example of a customer utilising the space for their students' requirements. Can we talk about #nursing and #parenting? There are so many resources with the message of all we need is to adapt, practice self-care, and find balance and everything will be fine. But working as a nurse while also managing caring responsibilities is tough. Caring at work and caring at home can cause stress and burnout (Freeling, 2023). Many nurses are experiencing work-life conflict, made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic. Navigating both nursing work and caregiving responsibilities remains exceptionally demanding, leading to personal, familial and work-related sacrifices. The stress and juggle of caring for children and/or ageing parents, in addition to managing nursing work, is a major issue facing nurses (Asiedu et al., 2018; Clendon & Walker, 2017; Ong et al., 2023). Better policies and interventions that support nurses to balance their work and caring responsibilities are needed. This includes flexible scheduling, an increase in paid sick leave, and access to affordable childcare and eldercare, without which it may be difficult for women with caring responsibilities to choose to participate in the workforce. It is more important than ever that employers recognise the challenges that nurses with caring responsibilities face. #nurse #wellbeing #nurseretention #policy #caring
