Kimberly Bell, PharmD is the chief of pharmacy at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center and serves as assistant dean for the MCW School of Pharmacy. When deciding which pharmacy career pathway to pursue, what was interesting or exciting to you about working in veteran’s affairs? "I think the VA is a unique setting. We’re very much a closed system, so for the most part, our patients get all of their care here. Whether I’m working in a clinical setting or I'm in the outpatient pharmacy, I have access to the patient’s entire medical record. It’s very different from working at a community pharmacy in the outpatient setting. I think the other difference is that all pharmacists at the Zablocki VA have a scope of practice, so depending on the area where they work, they can independently prescribe medications. Having that prescriptive authority is huge for the profession of pharmacy." Pharmacists by law cannot use the title "doctor" in some states! In 2023 Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law Senate Bill 197 This law was placed to prevent non physicians from using specialty titles such as "doctor," in an effort to promote transparency for patients. When I used to work in the outpatient pharmacy setting I remember the first time that a patient referred to me as doctor Patient comes up to the counter, and asks for the pharmacist I go up, answer the patient's medical question and  patient walks away saying "Thanks Doc" I didn't think anything of it, I mean, I do hold a Doctorate Degree Putting in a law that non physicians can not use the title "doctor"  (which they have EARNED) is just as ridiculous as saying: Non Physicians are not allowed to wear a white coat in an effort to promote transparency for patients. Pharmacy profession is growing rapidly Pharmacists are not going to school for a Bachelors of Pharmacy anymore they are going to school for a Doctor of Pharmacy We get doctorate level training and provide doctorate level care daily What are your thoughts about non physicians with doctorate level education using the title "doctor"? #Pharmacist #pharmacy #pharmd #doctor
