How can education providers challenge the status quo? We spoke to UTC Leeds, who are revolutionising the education sector through their focus on putting students and employers first. There, pupils aged 14 and over study a curriculum shaped around #STEM subjects and are taught real employability skills, such as being part of a team, personal time management and working with leading businesses like BAE Systems. Principal Hannah Wilson says their last careers fair at the college saw 85 employers turn up, having anticipated 40 – but it’s the impact the college has on social mobility that makes UTC Leeds one of our disruptors. You can read our full interview with Hannah on page 21 of our whitepaper, ‘Unleashing the power of disruption: how game-changers are shaping the future’. Are you going to this year's GHC? Another year has passed, and it's time for booking the annual Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) again. Are you going to this year's GHC? let me share my experiences with GHC. Attending GHC can be quite costly for students, with expenses for hotels and travel amounting to around $2000-3000. I ultimately decided to go because my main goal after graduating in the U.S. was to find a job. Having already spent tens of thousands of dollars on a master's degree, I felt that spending a bit more wouldn't make much of a difference. With this in mind, I immediately booked my flight and hotel. Approaching GHC with a "nothing to lose" attitude, I joined the event. Before flying, I connected with many friends, and we encouraged each other, practiced together, and shared tips. Having been confined at home after graduation, this was a rare opportunity to breathe and feel hopeful again. No matter what, GHC marked a new beginning for me. Finding a job was a tough journey for me. But because of GHC, I edited my LinkedIn profile for the first time. Because of GHC, I seriously revised my resume for the first time. Because of GHC, I engaged in long and intensive conversations with HR and recruiters for the first time. Because of GHC, I prepared common behavioral questions. I am grateful for such an event that allowed me to participate in the job market, helping me to become bolder to job opportunities. However, I want to emphasize that GHC only seemed important because I wanted to make a start. Without GHC, there would still be other events. Firstly, GHC charges a substantial entry fee for a job fair. It's hard to see real opportunities; it feels more like a showcase for companies. Given the large crowd, it's a great opportunity for companies to promote themselves, especially to future tech talent, making this exposure invaluable. Secondly, as a woman, I noticed many men attending GHC, some of whom secured opportunities and interviews. As an ordinary woman seeking a tech job, I thought GHC would offer many opportunities and support for women. I went with high hopes, took a 10-hour flight, only to feel deeply disappointed. If you ask me if I will attend this year's GHC, my answer would be yes.I have always had dreams since coming to the U.S. I aspire to work at a major tech company, experience their culture, and make meaningful contributions as a programmer, while also improving my financial situation. I believe last year's GHC was a result of economic downturns and over-expansion. Many companies didn't have open positions but didn't want to miss the exposure. Many men also couldn't find jobs and wandered around looking for opportunities. If my work and schedule permit, I would still consider attending GHC this year. Who knows when opportunities might arise? It's always good to stay optimistic!

The old saying "if you fail to prepare, then prepare to fail" is never more relevant than before a school or college visit. There's no point talking to a group of Year 12s about Math degrees when no one is doing A level Maths. In order to engage young people, you need to deliver content relevant to them. At Datafiltr, you can prepare for every school or college visit in minutes. All the relevant data about size of 6th form, subject and qualifications offered by the school and historical University destinations from previous 6th form cohorts (these are just a few data points) are available to you, all in one place. Why not try our demo. We are currently offering a free month trial.

Thanks to West London Free School and Alexis Allan for the invitation to participate in their Careers Fair again ! I am really happy to have had the opportunity to spread the word about geosciences and the energy industry. There is currently a crisis of students in geological sciences that many institutions and universities are trying to address in order to ensure future talent pipeline for the energy transition. These kind of events are efficient vehicles to raise awareness amongst students about the great careers available in geology!. I had an insightful question from one of the 6th form students about CO2 storage and its validity as a climate change mitigation measure given most of its current use is for enhanced hydrocarbon recovery (EOR). While EOR currently accounts for a substantial portion of CO2 utilization, CCS (storage in saline aquifer rock formation or depleted reservoirs) holds the potential for significant CO2 storage and emissions reduction in the long term. The skills and expertise of the oil and gas industry can be redeployed to this emerging industry, while contributing to a sustainable energy transition. We need new talent in geoscience disciplines to ensure a successful sustainable energy future! #STEMambassador #futureofgeosciences #energytransition #CCUS

Business Change, Transformation and Technology Expert 🚀👨🏽💻| Managing Director at DVF Recruitment | Board Director at Career Legal 💼 | DE&I Advocate | Over 30,000+ followers
**CALLING ALL MY NETWORK YOUR ASSISTANCE IS NEEDED ** Join us on the 12th September from 10-11am on a ZOOM call focused on 15-18 year old students from - ALL INDUSTRIES can be involved It has always been my goal for students to have the opportunity to learn about various industries to explore their career options. It's a fact that the majority of 15-20 year olds are unsure about their post-school plans. A significant issue is that schools often lack real world information and companies believe that a career fair is sufficient - it’s not… I am excited to share that DVF Recruitment & Career Legal is now involved in a new initiative centered around school mentoring programs. This provides a wonderful chance for us to make a real impact in the lives of students, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. We have partnered with Leigh Academies Trust, overseeing 34 schools, including 18 secondary schools. One of these schools is among the largest state schools in the UK and has encountered significant challenges, making our involvement even more crucial. To launch the program, the school will host an online event on September 12th from 10:00 to 11:00 am, led by the Deputy Head of Sixth Form and Careers Leader Luke Collins During this session, we will cover: - An introduction to the school and its mission - The benefits of collaborating with the school and insights into the student body There are various ways for you to get involved, including: - Creating a 90-second video about your role for their Unifrog platform - Speaking to small groups of students to generate interest in your field - Participating in career fairs - Offering potential placements for 6th form students - Hosting office tours for small groups of students - Providing work experience for Year 10 or Year 12 students, even if it's just for a day or two Would you be available to join the call on the 12th? Please contact Luca Lombardi on my team at luca@dvfrecruitment.com / if you can participate. Your presence is valued, even if you prefer to just listen. Thank you 🙂

Thank you very much Women's Agenda for this beautiful piece. Our iSTEM Co. Careers fair last year attracted over 250 attendees with 20 companies including Telstra, Westpac, CSL, Metro Trains Melbourne, Suburban Rail Loop Authority Arup and more. We are very excited for the opportunity to do this again this year in collaboration with the ACS (Australian Computer Society). In Australia, women make up 36% of University STEM enrolments but only 15% of STEM-Qualified occupations. Employment, Retention and Leadership are the biggest barriers to the acceleration of progress for women in STEM. And while one person can't fix it all, we can each play a role in addressing this problem. You can contribute by sharing this post, telling women in your network about this amazing opportunity or sponsoring the event as a business. Read Maedeh Nadimi's story here and see the impact of the work we are doing at iSTEM Co. Maedeh is not alone. With a PhD in Chemical Engineering-In view, she struggled to find work in the industry. Thanks to open minded businesses like South East Water David Bergmann that decided to take a chance and create an amazing opportunity. Today, Maedeh has progressed and has been with the company for two years and continuing with the support of our Mentoring program. So, if you are a woman with STEM qualification looking for the next career opportunity, then take advantage of this life changing opportunity and attend our iSTEM Co. Careers fair. We have 50% using the code NFP50. Tickets can be purchase on humanitix: https://lnkd.in/gipg_7ip Women in STEMM Australia STEM Sisters Women of Colour Australia Women in Data® Women In Digital Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) AWSN - Australian Women in Security Network Engineers Australia Careers in Colour Careers with STEM Professional Migrant Women (PMW) Women In Technology (WIT) Girls Who Code Code Like a Girl Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering The Australian Academy of Science Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Science & Technology Australia
The upcoming iSTEM Co. Women in STEM Careers Fair is a flagship event that aims to showcase the achievements of women in STEM and provide an opportunity to network and meet with potential employers. Participants will get the chance to connect with senior STEM leaders, employers, HR managers, recruiters as well as career coaches and DEI consultants. #STEM #womeninSTEM
