Have you discovered the guide and video tutorials on futures & foresight at Si yet? Tutorials: https://lnkd.in/eEniZ8Uu Booklet: https://lnkd.in/ecMrkaWY Futuring is the use of a systematic process to think about the future; framing and forming possible scenarios for the future to gain insight into the best actions to take in the present. Futurists use what they see in the present as a view on to the future; they watch trends and try to envision what may happen, but they are also aware that the future does not yet exist and thus is something to be created through the stories we tell. This course is here to help you learn the basic ideas and methods of futuring - it is particularly for those interested in transformational innovation. The first section explores the foundational ideas of futuring and ways to turn the future into an open space for new stories of change. The second section covers horizon scanning and the three horizons framework illustrating how horizon scanning helps us better make sense of complex dynamic environments. The final section is on scenarios and narrative building to identify trends and try to use them to shape possible scenarios and narratives about the future.

A couple of thoughts as we start 2024. The 'future' does not belong to those that design and execute it. The 'future' is not limitless. The 'future' is both the complexity of potentially being pre-ordained by those with strong capital resources, as well as, not conceived at all as the universe throws curveballs constantly. This is what I know to be true. The future(s) is inherited by the decisions those with arguably biased intentions, decide on today. The future(s) will bear the downstream impacts of unjust, inequitable status quo decisions made today. The future(s) will reflect our current ideologies, perspectives, selfishness and investments. Personally - thats not a future(s) I want anyone to inherit. We have to design different choices, manage and step up to different risk thresholds, and assume both moral and legal, fiduciary accountability for the downstream decisions we are making today. That's want to I want to be a part of creating.

I enjoyed this podcast with some dear former colleagues in it. On the question if AI will ever be able to self-manage a portfolio of assets, I’d agree that it is certainly tempting to believe that it can. Fundamentally AI is all about recognising (increasingly complex) patterns in (lots and lots of) data. The mere fact however that patterns exist should be enough for a human at some point to start placing bets against them. Also it will always require a human to dream up a vision of the world beyond those patterns. So yes, AI great to augment HI in many ways, but at the end of the day it will always be HI leading the way. The fundamental AI design challenge is not to loose the human connection in the process.

Going through my media reflections, I came across an article on "Futures Thinking", that I found insightful. The article explores the role of a futurist over the past fifteen years, shedding light on the practical applications and significance of futures thinking. Rather than predicting the future, the focus is on illuminating potential implications of present-day issues, serving as a framework for decision-making. The author emphasises the importance of collaboration, gathering diverse perspectives, and recognising the uncertainties inherent in predicting the future.
